Picked up an old but working 2 stage 5HP 80 gallon compressor. Here's the situation. Compressor works, check valve seems fine, pressure switch a little off but the gauge could be off too. Took tank up to 180 from empty in about 10-15 minutes. ISSUE: Compressor seems loud... I mean louder than my little HF single stage 8 gallon. Never had a compressor this big and no one else I know has one so I can't compare sound.
Funds are tight and I literally got this one for a song ($96) If I pick up a gasket set for this pump. (an older Sandborn B5000) would it be worth it to tear it down and look for something loose and clean it up and put it back together??
I can get a gasket set for $78 but I don't want to tear into it and then need to replace a shaft or more. Parts for this sucker aren't cheap. I sure would hate to toss on the Chinese HF 5HP 2 stage and have it be as loud as this thing. Should I run it till it explodes? I'd hate for the kids to be in the garage when it takes a dive.
Suggestions?? Ideas? If it were yours and you were cheap/poor, what would be your plan of attack.
