I need to replace an old bearing manufactured by New Departure. I understand that manufacturer no longer exists. The bearing is quite old and I don't thing the stamped code follows modern convention. Does anybody know how to decipher the old ND codes?

My bearing in question is a New Departure with code C 87115.

The outside diameter is definitely 35mm.

When I need a bearing that isn’t for a automotive application, or isn’t available through automotive suppliers, I try to have the bearing in hand when I go to one of several bearing suppliers we have here in our area. I let them do the matching up, with me just providing the useful info, what type of machine, environment, ext., if they can't just make a direct match using just the numbers and their own on the spot measurements. I’ve never had a complication with the process, they really know their stuff.

There was a bearing supply here I used to visit, they would measure any bearing I brought in and come up with one

Forgive my ignorance, but are these bearing supply places national chains I should look for in my area? Or just google "bearing supply house?"

Or find a repair (electric motor, or?) facility and ask them to recommend a place. There are bearing supply chains, I'm not sure if any are nationwide. E.G., here in Tacoma threr is McGuire, a Portland outfit. Bearings, Inc. may be nationwide.. To answer questions like this, a hint to your location would help. No need for a specific address!! Paradise is a little vague.

Machines with bearings are everywhere and the whole modern world cannot exist without them. From a farm to the space program’s Mar’s Rover, bearings make all of it possible. So there are always bearing suppliers close to any type of manufacturing or industries that need them yesterday. They all will be more than competent and motivated to get you the right bearing otherwise they would have been out of business years ago.

Check out Hammerscale. They service vintage Delta equipment and may have substitutes on-hand.

Thank you for this!

I've got a 14" Duro Drill Press from 1937 that has the New Departure spindle bearings that are NLA. I have to go and check, but they may be the same as the ones used by Delta and the spindle design is very similar. I will have to check with them and see if their spindle bearing adapter is of the right dimensions. Looks like that is how they get around the NLA bearing issue, by adapting one that is more commonly available. Oh the joys of vintage machinery!

I get what some of the posters have stated, but based on my searching using bearing supply shops in my locale (the nearest ones are 300km away) the ND bearing dimensions that I need are not replicated by any modern manufacturer.

So, going to your local supplier may not be of any help if you need what I need.

My recommendation is Accurate Bearing Company. Measure the bearing OD, ID, Height, and the Shaft it sits on. Sometimes older bearings would have metric measurements but the shaft could call for a special bore in inches. Then call Accurate and give them the information, they are great at matching bearings. Alternatively, once you have the measurements, just search for a ball bearing matching the specs. These days, I prefer Japanese bearings but there are likely a lot of options for you. Do you have any pics of the bearing? Is it a single row deep groove ball bearing? Is it shielded or sealed? On both sides?

What is that bearing out of?
New Departure Hyatt was a division of General Motors you may be looking at a part number as opposed to a bearing number.

This talk of bearings got me out in the shop to check since that number quoted by the OP sounded familiar. Indeed, my spindle bearings are also ND C87115. And the modern replacement is an NTN 6202LLU/15.875. Shown in photos below. This is a special 6202 series bearing with a non standard 5/8" inner bore instead of the typical 16mm inner bore.

What I am searching for are the unobtainium ND C87504 A21 bearings, with a non standard inner bore of 13/16", instead of the typical 6204 series with a 20mm bore. Looks like I will need to turn down my spindle drive slightly and then come up with a new way to secure the pulley. See, you need machining tools to fix old iron lol.

Excellent - another good resource to reach out to with an inquiry for obsolete bearings. Hope they can locate some NOS sitting on a shelf somewhere.

Fortunately, we have a McGuire Bearing branch about 15 miles away. Slightly closer than the Applied and Motion branches, too. I always used them for my business bearings and power transmission needs.
