I've always found the spout to be less messy than the plastic bottles... plus how many times have you dropped that damn plastic cap!

With the spout all you do is poke a hold for an air vent then turn the can 180 degrees and stick it in! Another plus was that the oil cans are easier to store because they're stackable.

The plastic bottles work great for me since I took a 2 liter bottle and cut the bottom of it out to make a funnel. Invert that bottle in the oil filler, and the plastic oil bottle fits completely into it and can drain fully at its leasure with never a drop leaked.

I remember back in the 1960s buying 2 gallon cans of refined used motor oil for $2.00 a can. All the local gas stations sold bulk oil in glass bottles with metal spout tops for 35 cents a quart. A friend worked in a Flying A gas station. Everytime they sold quart of oil at the station, they would set the paper oil can upside down on a small barrel and save the small amount of oil left inside to use in their oil burning 1950 Chevy sedan delivery powered by a babbit pounding 216 engine.

Those glass bottles are worth a bit of cash. The spouts are around and more readily available.

I have one with ford power steering fluid in it, and one of those spouts.
