Old Plastic Black+Decker drill question

I also posted it on the tool forum:

I have an old Black+Decker 3/8" drill that I got with S&H Green Stamps in the 1970's. I found it under my back work bench. It is one of those cheap orange plastic pistol drills. I would like to get it back to use again. Does anybody sell parts for it? Also, the output shaft is very sloppy in the steel bearing behind the chuck. If I can't buy a bearing, I can kind of make one. The bearing in there is steel, would brass be ok? Also, for grease, can I use Milwaukee Type E? Thanks!

Why bother? Doesn't sound like it's worth the effort.

If it's a bearing, it's a common size. If it's a bushing it will be a common size too. Which is it?

I have one of those that I grabbed at a yard sale for $5.00 in the late 70's. I still use it sometimes just to see how long it will live.

Those orange B&D tools are hard to kill. I had one of the orange '70's belt sanders that I got from SWMBO's grandad in the 1990's after he died. I carried it in my truck and used it for all the overhead and vertical sanding where I couldn't use my Porter Cable worm drive belt sander. It just wouldn't quit. I finally sold the worm drive to a collector, and replaced it with a two Milwaukee belt sanders, and sold the orange B&D at a garage sale for $5. I bet it's still going strong.

It was originally a steel bushing and I am in the process of fitting a bronze one I had on hand. The drill is worth nothing but since I have had it for many years (1970's) I figure why not fix it up for a few bucks. And it use to drill pretty good too. The only reason I stopped using it was I have two air drills and a cordless that I use in the shop.

I vote to keep the old dude going!

Besides sentimental value, you'll have the satisfaction of giving new life to the tool and fixing something most people would just toss. They ain't making 'em like that anymore!

I got it all done. Installed and reamed a new output shaft bushing, new gear grease, new cord and cleaned it all up and I am all ready to drill!!! Had all of the stuff on hand so total cost $0.00.

Drill chuck question. The original Black and Decker 3/8" drill chuck broke in the 1980's and my father put a 1/4" chuck on it. I was thinking of going back to a 3/8" chuck. Should I go Jacobs 41BA3/8 or one of those original Black and Decker chucks? I would like to keep it more original . I know my original Black and Decker broke but were they all bad or maybe I had a bad one? I am going to be using this drill again while not often, it has to still be able to do a job. Thanks!
