Never before hanging around here would I blow good money on an old box like this. Pretty rough but it was too cool to leave in the antique shop, might of overpaid but thought you guys might appreciate it. Doing this from my phone so fingers crossed if the pic works.

Sorry guys I'm on the road (traveling salesman) and not really setup to get many pics till I get home. The top hinge is missing, The main opening has a fold out shelf and a very deep space. The bottom flap hinges down to uncover 4 small drawers with partitions if I remember correctly. It has been priced at 90$ for the last couple weeks and I've talked myself out of it, until today. Since it wasn't moving I was able to negotiate a lil money off the top, but not enough to make it a steal.

Anywho, any idea as to age? I was thinking about restoring it and getting it professionally painted, but since the logo's are paint and not tags or imprints, I worry I'd lose too much of it's originality -- even if I made an accurate stencil and repainted the logos. So for now I'll see how much rust I can get off it without killing the paint, and then probably wax it to protect what finish is left.

Well if ebay is any measure, I did ok on price. Here's the same box with older labels that sold for almost 3 bills. Click for old ebay auction

Got another pic off my phone from earlier, it's raining right now and I think the folks in the hotel might think me funny to pulling it out in the rain in the parking lot and taking more pics.

Congrats on the find. I use the same 9990 box daily as my secondary top box. The original finish looks pretty intact still, I believe that that box (probably mid forties) should have the chinese red wrinkle finish. I've had great success carefully pressure washing that finish. It really gets the dirty and grime out of the contours of the paint. Just be careful around the lettering. If you do decide to repaint it, krylon makes a wrinkle finish that is very close to the original. Message me if you want the information on that.

Again, nice find. It's a fantastic and well made box.

Don't repaint it

It's only original once!

Clean it and wax it and enjoy it

There was one like that at Rejuvenation in PDX this summer. I think they wanted something crazy like $350 for it.

OK, couple days late but I managed to take some more pictures. It's a cool old box, but now that I look at it, I'm not sure what role it will fill in my shop. I'm afraid to use it roughly because it is rare, yet I don't need a display piece.

Anywho, here are some detail pics:
