I've got a lot of 19.2 Nicd volt tools that are still good but my chargers took a dump so now I dont have a way of charging them. Is there anyone on here that has over came this problem. I just hate the toss good tools in the trash because of this issue. You can find batteries and Ive even rebuild a couple batteries myself , I just need away to charge them.
Thanks

You can buy a generic charger but will need to figure out a way to connect to terminals (couple of spade connectors would probably work). I have two of these. It supports NiCd, NiMD as well as lithium. Works on household current or your car.

Can you tell me how long it takes to charge a battery. The original chargers are 1 hr chargers.

I haven't used it for NiCD but it's programmable to charge from 0.1 to 6.0A. I think the porter cable charger is rated about 2A. I checked manual and it says it supports NiCD from 1 to 15 cells so may not work on your packs which I am assuming are 16 cells (19.2/1.2). I'd confirm first before buying one of these.

Some of the older chargers fail because a capacitor went bad on the board.
No clue whether this would be the case with a Porter Cable charger though.
You also need to make sure the charger will work with the battery type, since some chargers were made just for NiCd, and then others later for NiCd and NiMH, and then some later chargers for NiCd and NiMH and Lithium.

I don’t think the Porter Cable 19.2 volt tools were ever made with lithium batteries as an option, so an original charger for lithium batteries is probably not an option,
But it’s possible NiMH batteries and cells might work on the older chargers.

Everything I've read over the years says don't charge nicad or NIMH in a charger intended only for li-ion. But I think the chemistry of NIMH and nicad are similar enough that the actual charging should be fine. Once fully charged, iirc, that's when they differ where one tolerates a continued charge better than the other. I could be confusing that with some other comparison, though, so somebody should confirm that.

I’m going to take one of the chargers by a electronics place and see if they would look at it.
I which I had a schematic of how the charger works, that might help the guy working on it.

Ditch the nicad ****. I held on to PC NiCAD stuff until 2012ish IIRC. I was paying to get the batteries rebuilt every few years. I thought man the $250 PC drill is way better than something 1/2 the price...WRONG. I moved onto the Ryobi platform and never looked back. Still using my original Ryobi batteries too.

Check out directools.com and watch them for sales, on a good one, you'll pay about 30% of new retail.
