Hello Gents,
I hope this isn't too ambitious for a noob post, here goes.
I have this poor abandoned old Snap-On torque wrench that I have given a new home to. It is my intention to return this tool to service and I have some questions for the gurus here.
Exhibits A, B, and C:
The crystal is scuffed and dull but I think the face of the dial may be okay. The needle is bent. The plated steel has a bit of surface rust and is scratched. The aluminum housing is pretty scored.
However, the mechanism seems to work perfectly (returns to zero from either direction and sweeps smoothly, I assume since it is a sort of a beam type mechanism it shouldn't really need recalibrated, although I would definately compare it to a known good wrench to be sure). It was together when I got it so I'm pretty sure all the damage is external
-Where would I find a crystal or dial and needle? Adapt or fabricate something? I suppose a new dial would be a suitable substitute if it read 0-150 lbs-ft on a 180 degree sweep.
-How does the crystal/dial come off? Pry? How does the needle come off?
-What would I use to polish the plated part?
-How should I polish/refinish the housing? Blast with soda or walnut?
-How old do you think this thing is?
-When did S-O stop making these things?
-Do the later style of molded plastic cases exist for these things (vs. cardboard box) and where to find one?
Any help is appreciated, I've become kind of fond of this thing.....
thanks guys
