Hello everyone, I am very new here and working on my Garage. It is great to find a forum like this.

I need an air compressor and have been looking for a good used one. I want something that can handle soda blasting, painting and air tools. Will a Saylor Beall, 3HP, 60 gallon tank work for this? Because I think I would need over 18 CFM and from what I can tell this Saylor-Beall for sale local to me has a 705 pump which is a little over 17 CFM. Thoughts? It is selling for $375.

You are on the right track for the size and cfm requirements. $375 is a great price as long as it is in running condition. Welcome to Garage Journal.

Thank you, I just got of the phone with the seller. He sounded like he was up in his years. He is not retiring but upgraded one size up. He has been using it since the late 70's or early 80's. It is still hooked up and I can test it. I need to see if my neighbor could help me pick it up.

I love Saylor Bealls. If that was anywhere close to me I'd have been picking it up while you were here asking about it ;) And I already have four compressors.

Someone did just that. I lost it while trying to find a ride with a truck. My first neighbor said he was busy and the second didn't come home yet. The worst part was that he said he would of held it for me if I asked. I didn't think he would so I never asked. So the search goes on. :(

Ahh that *****, man. Next time maybe go an put an earnest money deposit on it, and arrange the hauling later! Just FYI that was a too-good-to-pass-up price on a Saylor Beall... interest was bound to be high.

There are a billion and one compressors out there - you'll find the right one!

I thought about going up there before I found a ride but it is almost 2 hours round trip. I only wanted to make one trip. It took about month of searching to find this one. Most I see listed are cheap brands and too small. Maybe next time it will be something closer I hope.

***** you missed it but if you are sure you need over 18CFM then that compressor wasn't for you. With a 3HP motor and ASSUMING it is a 705 pump (could have a 703) then that would put out 12.3 CFM @ 100 PSI and 11.2 CFM @ 175 PSI.

Now, if you find a 705 pump with a 5hp motor then that would meet your needs. That compressor puts out 18.3 CFM @100 PSI and 17.3 CFM @175 PSI.

The fact that it had a smaller 60 gallon tank makes me think it had a 703 pump but it is still possible it had a 705. In my experience most times the 705 is on an 80 gallon tank.

Saylor Beall is in my opinion at the very top of air compressor manufacturers. As a matter of fact I just bought one myself. Where are you located?

Sorry for the slow reply. I have not been feeling well.

I am saving money to buy a new one if I have too but it is around $2000 for a 80 gallon. I really want to buy a good air compressor and have it meet future and current needs.

So I have been cleaning the garage to make room for my new setup and started to sale stuff I didn't need. Just made another $20 this morning by selling some old tires. My garage cleanup has made $60 total so far. Only $1940 more to go! I will have a garage sale in a few weeks and all the proceeds will go to buying a compressor.

As for my location I am in the U.S. ;) I don't want to list location details until I find a compressor. If I find one and ask questions on here I don't want to create more local competition.

Sorry you missed out on nice used Saylor-Beall compressor.

That WOULD have been a terrific first compressor for $375 . . . ouch.

Gotta get yourself a cheap utility trailer (or friend to borrow one) so you can jump on those deals. Slap the trailer behind car and head out!!

Better luck on next one . . . be prepared to jump on short notice.

Thanks for the tip. I would need to get a tow hitch as well. My car does not have anything to attach to the back. The air compressor is so tall it must be easy to tip over while you are transporting it.

I've got 4 cyl Cavalier and added tow hitch so I could use lightweight mesh trailer . . . hitch and trailer total were under $500 and well worth it. Try Hidden Hitch and I'm sure they make one for your vehicle.

My compressor score was from CL and drove 200 miles to go get it with Cavvie and lightweight trailer!! I partially laid down compressor on bunch of foam and then ratchet strapped with McGyver method and compressor made it just fine. Since my trailer floor was steel mesh, I first installed sheets of plywood for temporary floor before I went to get compressor. Brought along an appliance dolly and just wheeled the compressor up onto trailer using the flopdown rear gate. Lots of ratchet straps are a good thing!!

Point taken, but here's where that question is going. Saylor Beall's distribution chain seems to be much stronger in the northern midwest states. If you're down here on the Gulf coast like I am, they almost never come up. So if you're set on a SB and you live in South Texas or Louisiana, it might be a looooooong wait and you will want to entertain other options. If you're in Michigan where SB is much more plentiful, you may find one in shorter order.

I finally quit looking for one and settled for a Champion... which is something of a misnomer, since Champion is hardly second to anyone, but I did have to give up on finding a SB.

I saw some US General (Bellaire) compressors at Harbor Freight today. I thought they no longer carried those. More money but a great compressor. Not Central Pneumatic!

I live in the East Coast. Most of what is for sale around here are your regular store brands. The Saylor Beall was a rare find after looking for only a month. It will take more searching to figure out how rare they are but so far it has only popped up once. I will keep my eye out for a Champion as well but I must say I like the classic color and look of the Saylor Beall.

I still hope I can find one.

Is the Central Pneumatic the same but re-branded again? I only see the Central Pneumatic online. I wonder if some stores have old stock of the US General? Was it a 60 or 80 Gallon? I read they stopped caring the 80 gallon a while ago. And also stopped the US General branded compressors.
