Or, as they put it - RPM counter. I have two of these - identical. The other one is still in the box it was shipped in - this one is just in the case w/ instructions inside the lid. Anyone ever seen one like this?

used them in school
typical use was more for motors or equipment. not automotive

They are nice for setting the lathe when cutting threads. I have used my Stewart Warner to adjust the belt speed for a thresher before also.

We used some similar to that for measuring conveyor belt speeds.

See the center one? That's the one, Wood's Patent.
Also diemakers square, registering outside caliper, Starrett 1/2" ratcheting mic and folding solid nickel caliper rule.
Can't take a decent picture in this light, sorry.
