I'm on a run of getting my grubby little hands on old pieces of equipment that need repair. Most belonged to my father-in-law and cost me nothing. Of course, that just fans the flames.

Today, I ran into this on CL. It would be nice to have a belt drive, although I've no experience with them in my home garage shop. So, what do you guys think?

Old Sears Craftsman Bench Grinder on Stand - $50
Belt drive by 1/4 hp motor.
Includes various grades of polishing rouge and buffing wheels with some life left.
Needs safer rewiring and a little TLC, otherwise a great tool addition.

Thanks for the thumbs up. I figured it's a good find but wasn't sure. Looks like it will clean up well and not require a lot except patience and attention to detail. In your opinion, fifty bucks is good? This wouldn't be a 'museum' piece. It would get some work time in my home garage shop (not a lot of hogging. just some cleaning, sharpening, debur, etc.) Thanks again.

That is a good price for the whole thing. The motor needs to redone for safety reasons if nothing else. But get that done and use it get projects done!

I just spoke to the owner about the grinder. He said the grinder should suit my purposes. It should be rewired with a switch, perhaps even a foot switch for safer use. He just plugs it in and goes. The wheels have remaining life, but the buffing wheels may not. Replace the V-belt, clean and perhaps repaint and I'll be in business. It now works, but the belt is old. All that being said, I'll go cement the deal and thank the guy for not scrapping it ... which we tend to do so quickly any more.

The closest spray can match to that color will be Valspar #85205 Classic Royal Blue.
Available at Lowes.

It will give you as close a match to the original bright blue that you can get.
(which is brighter than the faded blue that you see now)
