Cairo (pronounced Care-O) Illinois (southern tip of the state) has been called Little Egypt, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the song/location.
the entire southern third of IL is called Little Egypt so that does not narrow it down much if it was IL. Around here Egypt is even used in the name of government buildings.

Song first recorded in 1962 by the Coasters. Elvis Presley also did a version. I remembered the song from my misspent youth and googled it.
Singing groups often find a run down area of town for back ground for recording their song. Ex, Travis Tritt's recording of the Eagles' song "Take it Easy". I suspect a lot of the background for these music videos can be found in the Nashville area.

Had been wondering whether it was a, dressed up, "local" site ... or whether it had been filmed, whilst he was traipsing around the U.S. as a little bloke.
The sly sods covered up too much of the name, for me to make it out.
So did many others at the time.
Clever little bloke ... even spent time with a lot of U.S. blues names, like Jeff Baxter and BB King.
... Now has his own band, and the worlds loudest drummer apparently ..
