old sioux drill press

I went to buy some random stuff and came home with a Sioux drill press. I have never seen one of these. Anybody out there have one or used one. How well do they work?

Nice Find! I don't have a "Sioux", but have a "Thor" look alike. These old drill presses had the best of both worlds, in a portable, and drill press all in one IMO. Yours looks like late 40's to early 50's, as mine is.

I was originally thinking of passing this thing along, but after I was looking it over today I kind of like it. It runs at no load 600 rpms and 300 load rpms. I wondering how well it cuts through steel.

Sioux made some good stuff. I had Sioux Air drill I bought in 1967, it lasted for 40 years then one of my employees dropped it and cracked the stud where the chuck mounts....company out of bus..can't get parts. RIP

If drilling with big bits (what it was designed for), and they catch, the drill will wind up your arms like a pretzel in an instant. That is why the press is a good idea, you have a chance at least. Without the DP frame guys have broken arms with dills that big and slow.

OH, I am with you on this. I have spent a fair amount of time with a hole hawg. I would never take that thing out of drill press frame. I was just thinking about putting a vise on it and using it around the shop to bore holes in steel mostly. I have a bench top drill press that is a japanese import. It has always worked well for me, but it is not very cool. The only nice thing about it is all the MT bits I have for it.

That will eat a hole better than most any light drill press. If you drill steel, it's the way to go.

Nice Score Mars! I love the looks and the badges of the Sioux tools. I have a couple of the air tools but no electric power ones.

I have that drill motor and a press stand that is similar. I have used it as a poor mans mag base drill. Clamp or bolt it to the material being drilled and go to it.

I will take some snaps of an old Sioux drill motor and a press attachment for it; or is it the other way 'round? I see that snaps on photbucket get removed; is that because people don't keep a membership or something? I can't tell if the old drill motor and press stand I have are like the one which started this thread or not.
