Old Snap-on Military??? Box. What do I have?

Got a cool old box today, about 12 x 2 x 5 inches (just guessing, don't have it in front of me). painted green, but was gray originally. I'd guess 1930's to 1940's by the style.

Any guesses what it was originally used for?
