I have found a old snap on roll cabinet (guessing 50's-60's) that is grey. The paint does appear original in the picture I was shown of it. My question is did these boxes ever come in grey or has someone stripped and repainted the box?

When I started selling Snap On Tools in 1971 There were some gray boxes in the catalog. I never had anyone interested in the gray color and never sold any. The best I remember with out going back and looking at my old catalogs they only lasted 2 or 3 years longer in gray in the catalogs.

My father's pre WWII box is grey. I would have bought a new box that color if it was still offered.

it is possible that the grey finish of the box you've pictured is original to the piece and the box would be the Snap-on KGA-377A. you can find the description in the 1962 Catalog Y p006 as in others.

the grey finish of the KGA-377A was an alternative to the red finish of the Snap-on KRA-377A. it is the same box with a different color. the 3 bottom drawer configuration (KGA-433 3-Drawer Set) that your picture displays was an option to the empty bottom that was offered with the standard box. the 3 drawer setup included a small top drawer and 2 larger drawers below it. although it is hard to make out in your picture, the bottom does appear to have 3 drawers.

I'm restoring a K55-W in that color and need to repaint it. Does anyone know a rattle can color that will be a close match?

It's a pretty dark gray. I have few various rattle cans I have tried, none match exactly.

Merlin Grey RAL 180 40 05 / BS 18B25
?
I have some of this colour I use it on my farm buildings steelwork it looks the same as those old boxes to me.

Or, look it up on this website, very useful for matching close shades of colour to get the codes.

In the 1940s anyway, Snap-On called it "Slate Grey Wrinkle Finish"..... looks like this. Not sure where it went years later....the 1962 catalog (attached, and also available online) simply mentions "Grey Enamel Finish"
