Old Snapon Wrench Question....

Hey guys....long time viewer, first time poster. What a wealth of information here!!

Question is: I recieved a 1951 Snap-On Flare Wrench (1/2" & 8/16") from my grandfathers estate. It has some surface rust from being in his basement. Does a wrench of this vintage have any value? Also, would it be worth it to try any other chemical cleaners to remove the rust first, or should I just go get the evaporust?

Also, I recieved a S-K Flare Wrench from the same place (5/8" & 11/16"). I dont see any info online about date codes.....do any exist for S-K tools?

I have no idea about collector value, if it's not perfect it's probably just a wrench. I have heard of good results from using white or apple cider vinegar for rust removal.

I vote for evaporust; it works really well and doesn't affect any chrome that is left, just attacks the rust!

to me 50s is just not old enough or new enough to bring in the money. and if its not near perfect it loses most of it value.
(warning: just my opinion. I make no guarantee of accuracy)

clean the thing up and use it. it was your grandfathers sp you will think of him anytime you use it.
I have some 50s snap on tools that my dad bought new when he worked at a service station (working his way through college). we still use the things and dont think twice about it.

No great value, maybe 25% of what a new one would cost, at least that's what I would sell it for. As far as SK goes, I believe if it says SK-Wayne on it is of 60's vintage. If just SK it could be newer or older iirc.

I'm assuming this is the type of wrench that has the V groove going down the beam and is not polished chrome. If the rust is fairly light, a fine wire wheel after the wrench has been sprayed down heavy with WD-40 might do the trick. Just make sure the wrench stays wet with WD-40 the whole time it's in contact with the wire wheel.

More interested in collecting others to make a set or selling it and putting the money twards a diffrent brand set. Althoe the SK is in much better condition, I would like to complete the snapon set.

Correct.....not sure if it is just cast material or if its chromed over the rough casting.
