Old Tool Pricing

Heya Everyone,

I was hoping some of you could help me out here. A good friend of mine's father was a VW mechanic. After he died he left all his tools with his wife. His son (my friend) isn't interested in them so they offered them to me since I work on Porsches and the two manufacturers use similar parts. I didn't need all of the tools so I picked out the ones I wanted. The tools I took I inventoried and put into a spreadsheet that is linked below.

My question is what is a fair price for these tools? All of it is heavily used but in good working order. Can any of you give me a hand with a fair price for the lot?

$.50 on the $1.00 seems to be the rule of thumb most use.

Sounds like there's a little history there with these tools. Before you go too far down the bunny trail and sell them for a buck or two, you may want to re-think this.

Your friend probably gave them to you with the thought of "helping a buddy with my Dad's old tools...." If he finds out you eBay'd them, you may be hurting his intentions. If you truly don't want them, take inventory of your nephews, neighborhood kids, etc. Maybe there's a young kid out there that would appreciate having them and put them to good use. Your friend and his Mom will like hearing that their Hubby / Dad's tools are helping a young guy out, not being turned for a buck on the internet.

I understand what you're saying completely and I agree. Guess I wasn't clear in the orignal post but I intend to keep every all these tools for myself. I even made my friend agree that if he or his 4 month old son EVER wanted them back, their his. I just want the fair pricing so I can pay his mom what they are worth.

You'll have to spend some time looking up prices, but I pretty much agree with Krusty, 40 - 50% of new cost is fairly typical for good used tools.

The Hazet stuff occasionally seems to command crazy prices on ebay, as do the VW tools.

My apologies - you're way ahead of me. Hard to say what to give the Mom, but I know what the 4 month old would be getting for his 13th birthday!!! In the meantime, I'd enjoy the tarnation out of them.

Heck, there you go - a kind letter to Mom explaining that her Hubby's tools are being "put up" until junior turns 13 or 14. Guaranteed to put a warm smile on her face.

Snap On usually 50% Matco,Mac,25% Proto and others 10% If its something you really need you can go higher. A pawn shop would probably be at least 50% of the prices I suggested.
