Old tools

I have a well stocked garage that lets me tackle just about any project that I want to. And although I don't "need" anything I just love old tools.

If I'm at an estate sale and stumble upon an old Ridgid pipe wrench or cool set of 1950's era Craftsman sockets, I have to buy them. I can't help myself. I have a well worn 1960's S-K hip-roof box that is full of these "finds".

And yes, I use them. Today when I worked on my line trimmer I use all tools out of that box. To me there is just something that feels right about using tools as old or older than myself.

I'm guessing that some of you might share my addiction.

Presently working on an old Craftsman 3/8 drive =v= ratchet that has the selector lever locked up. Reason for getting it at the flea market: the outside is in pristine condition for a tool 50 or so years old. I have other 3/8 ratchets like this, just not in like new condition. I got the gear out and it is like new. Haven't gotten really serious yet about the locked up selector but have PB blaster on it. This is the time of year when I have to take time out to mow grass which inteferes with projects.

My girlfriend says I have a sickness.I go to a lot of estate sales and buy tools. I bought a Snap On 3/4" drive socket set for $10.00 and Williams bottom box for $20.00. How could anyone say no to these ? Sicker than a $200.00 stuffed bear that you can't touch ?

Some of the SAE wrenches I use on my weekend projects are over 100 years old now.

Just got 3 Craftsman V series ratchets, in 1/2, 3/8 and 1/4. One missing selector, one missing guts and one just rusty and locked up. Greased the one, and got Sears to rebuild the others. Equals 3 nice new ratchets. Got em' free.

I have a Craftsman 1/4" drive V series ratchet. I used it last week to take apart and reassemble a 1960's Slingerland snare drum. It crossed my mind that it could have been put together originally with a similar wrench.

If it's a small job I'm more likely to grab my tools from my old S-K box than my newer, shiny tools from my main tool chest.

If I'm doing something larger I'll often use the "new" tools as I have a larger assortment (for now) and I am more likely to have something specialized if I need it.
