Old torch

I was helping a buddy clean out his shop before he moved across the country. He handed me this and told me to put it in the trash pile........decided to keep it instead.

My brother-in-law has one fairly similar but a bit more of a crude design, as if it'd older yet. He just has it on display on the fire place mantle.

cool Kerosene or lamp oil torch. Bet you unscrew the torch head to fill it.

there's another thread on here buried all about those old alcohol and gasoline torches. do a search and there is much to learn on them.

your's looks much older than the ones I typically see...very nice indeed!

Once common for heading old soldering irons. Lots of types and makes-some have a considerable value. They make an interesting collection.

Gasoline. Fill plug is in the bottom.

I like it. What is the deal with the handle? Never seen one like that. I have (4) Torches and probably have given away a dozen over the years to friends. Now I want to get back into collecting them. Most have very little value to them, but then there are some, and yours may be one that has some significant value to it due to the handle arrangement.

You are missing a hook though at the top. The hook is used to cradle the soldering iron. And then normally there is a gunsight at the tip of the torch that also cradles the other end of the soldering iron. Yours appears that it doesn't have that. And if not, that is the first that I have ever seen that doesn't have the means to hold a soldering iron.

Nice save though. It's worth keeping as a show it off piece. A lot of people have also made lamps out of them. All in all, they are just pretty cool to have, and well worth collecting for the heck of it.

A friend of mine has one almost identical to that.

They're handy to have around and useful. One important thing to look for is a steel bottom on the tank. They've been known to rust out and leak with unpleasant results. Make sure it's brass if you plan to use it.

To fire it up, pump up pressure and then hold hand over end. Crack valve open and let gas run down into the preheat cup until it's full. Close valve. Light and let burn until fuel is almost all burned, then crack valve open and torch will light. Let run for a few minutes, then open valve as required.

I have seen these type torches before but never knew what they were for other then a torch. Thanks for the insight. Rich

Just picked up one at yard sale for $2.00 bucks yesterday Its a Craftsman looks pretty old the only number on it is 249-1 I know its not worth much but it looks pretty cool I tried to post a pic but I cant master that yet
