Old Vintage Craftsman box......

I picked this neat old box up today at the fleamarket for $20.00, I'm not sure on the vintage but I would say at least from the 40's. I put some of my old craftsman stuff in there. The 2 hole's on the cover are not original but I think this is still very cool!!!

How do you know the holes are not original, or what are they for?

edit: just noticed that the drawers don't look like they use slides or rails.

The smaller hand carried boxes Sears made in the day were short on extras, but cool nonetheless today. Wrenchr got a very cool one indeed I too have an older one I need to post a few pics of when I get a chance

Wow I dig that! I have a bunch of older Craftsman sockets & some wrenches from probably the same era with that type of logo on them.

The hole's are not even and I can tell they were drilled.

I hope not, I think that would be a mistake. You can tell it has an old wrinkled texture finish that cannot be replicated. I would leave as is, remember they are only original once!

Nice box!! It looks to be in good shape. Try using WD40 on a spot to see if it helps clean it up. I have used it on some of my old boxes and it has worked well. Also, Kennedy recommends it for their brown wrinkle paint......just keep it away from the decal!
I try not to refinish unless I have to....it's next to impossible to replicate the original paint finish. I have an old SK box which had a similiar texture and couldn't match it. I read somewhere they achieved it by using to different kinds of paint which in todays market would require a good bit of $$ to achieve....at least for me because I'm cheap.

i would not fix the holes. Nor would I refinish the box (as UB has already said). Just enjoy teh thing...

I'm kinda curious what the holes mighta been for? Seems an odd spot to stick a couple big holes like that. Either way.. I'd stick with a little cleanup like you said and just enjoy it for what it is! Patina can't be reachieved now matter how many "tricks" you use!

EDIT.... I was looking and one of the holes looks to have another circular mark in the paint about the size of a largish washer/etc under it. I wonder if there is supposed to be a handle on there?

Not sure but I think that box is pre 1940's.
Whatever the date, its an uncommon box in nice shape.

I went through a Sears Craftsman tool catalog from 1949 this afternoon looking for that box. What I found looked close, but had a few more details Wrenchr's does not which leads me to belief it is some years earlier than the one shown in the 1949 catalog.

I too think the holes are there because some schmoe along the way installed a handle, in particular due to the holes location.

There was a slight bend in the lid that I hammered out, nothing a body hammer and dolly could not handle

Wrenchr, I've got an old C-man double end open wrench that will look really nice in that old C-man box. It has the same style Craftsman underlined logo as the box does. I'll have to send it to you when I get a moment.
