Cornelius Mfg of Toledo, Ohio came to market with this kit in 1937. There are references to it in trade magazines through the early 1950's, so apparently they were sold for awhile. It says patent pending, but I haven't been able to find any patent info on it, yet. Here's the before and after pics and a bunch more from the refurb.

Before and after

Old advertisements

Jaws slide over the pins

Jaws for non-parallel stuff

Chunky jaws for holding various shapes

Soft jaws

Rounded soft jaws

Also helps with lunch

Here's some pics from the refurb process. One of the hinges was broken, so I drilled them out and replaced them with a single piano hinge.

De-rusting and evapo-rusting

Watching paint dry.

Cut the heads off some nails and made rivets. My hands got tired, so I used the vise.

Used a chunk of RR track as a backstop for the rivet pounding.

The one on the right has been flattened.

Finished. It opens and closes, so I declare it a success.

bigcaddy,
The waffle jaws still need some work. They should be mirror images of each other so the grooves line up, but they're both the same. I need to drill out one of the jaws and flip it over. That's the Craftsman you sent me serving as the vise model.

Fretters,
I cleaned them with dish soap and a plastic brush. There is still some discoloration in them, but they'll get dirty anyway. Also, you should be asleep already. Nothing good can come from looking at vises in the middle of the night.:eyecrazy:
