I need a big grinder. I have two choices. A used 3/4 hp 7" Craftsman block grinder from the early 80s for $80 OR a brand new old stock Craftsman Pro 8" 1 hp still plastic wrapped in the box for $100

Second option sounds pretty right to me. How new /old is the NOS one? I would imagine it's worth the $20 for the extra hp and the fact that it's new. Just my $.02

The old block will out last the newer chinese grinder. It should have more torque and power as well.

+1 for the old Craftsman block grinder. That 3/4 HP is the real deal.

It's first leg of trinity of GJ must-have tools. You'll still need to score a Wilton bullet vise, and old school drill press (with vari-slow option)! :D

Plus, no satisfaction owning the shiny new asian grinder.

Buy the C-Man block grinder and post up thread for the refurb !! ;)

I have a grinder like the new one in the box
It's a good grinder but I still like the older ones
If it was me I think I would offer 150 for both and get both

I have 22 vises in my shop shop including 3 6" 150lb+ vises and I just bought a walker drill press. I have a 3/4 hp Dayton grinder now but I wanted acsecond. I'll get the old one.

JS: the old Block gets my vote. if you haven't read any of the block grinder's thread you might want to. the guys on there have a ton of knowledge about those well built old grinders so if you run into a fix issue when restoring yours you'll have friendly help if you ask. be careful though because it's addicting and you'll end up owning more grinders than vises.

take a look at Big Blue with a Big Michigan M on it that Tourqueman restored and has posted a few pictures of it. i think started out pretty close to the 3/4 HP grinder you are buying. what HP is your Dayton because if it's a US made one it's a keeper?

good luck

JP:that older 3/4 HP might have more power than the 1HP so it gets my vote. can you post any pictures?

^^^Exactly.

Sears has been defrauding the consumer with unreal HP ratings on the newer machines. If you compare amps I'm willing to bet the 3/4HP block grinder is way more powerful.

I bet Sears doesn't even spec. running amps on the Chinese grinders.

Your image isn't very good but that block grinder looks to be 100% complete. That's very important because most of them are missing parts that can be real tough to find.

I'll add my vote for the older block. I started out a month or so ago looking for a new grinder and quickly found that the craftsman/porter cable/reasonably priced models are made in China and not worth the money. The blocks, on the other hand, are made extremely well, easy to repair (for the most part!) and run great.

The newer one is the one you should buy.

Send ME the old piece of junk, it is dangerous and I'll dispose of it safely.

OK, just joking!

Check my sig. line for links and resources for that older CM grinder, aka CM Block grinders.

Parts are available, and there are restores posted that will help with a step-by-step restore/repair, or what ever you need to to to make it like new.

Note of caution: as others will testify, 1 is not enough. You may want more.

I can smile about it now! Besides, the grinder named itself during the process. Still worth it even with the scare.

(For those not familiar, the starter winding on my 3/4hp was a bit crispy. At the end, it all checks out, but I had a scare with some smoke coming out of it due to operator error: I put a bit of lithium grease on the inner faces of the stator to deter rust. Don't do that. :)
