Old wards drill press

I have a very old Montgomery Wards drill press given to me by my father in law. Its a floor model with a lot of power. Don't know if anyone is familiar with the router/ shaper- drill press., Its a 17" model THS-2437A. Here is my question: when I press the start button sometimes it hesitates then takes off and sometimes while drilling, when I pull down the knob it will at times bog down and slow to a crawl. Maybe brushes?????? It has not seen any kind of tune up probably ever. I know I could buy another used one but what do I have? and I don't know if I want to go the Harbor freight route. Is it belt driven? If so, the belts are probably old and slipping under load!

I second the belts as the problem.
Old, brittle, and flat spots.

it is not belt driven, solid state. A dial controls the speed. I will try to get pics

Hmm, ok well next guess would be the riostat/dial/potentiometer.

Well, if u would have mentioned that you are running this on an extension cord in your first post, then we could have pointed to the extension cord as the culprit. What you're experiencing is voltage drop. Get a thicker extension cord or put in a subpanel in your garage!!
