old water heater question

I'm getting ready to replace my 17 year old water heater (a Reliance 501 model). The water heater still works but I purchased it back in 1993 and it's getting a little crusty, plus at 17 years of age I think I've probably been pushing my luck with it.

Is there any value in these things for scap, parts or ?

I don't know of any value, but I still have one that is thirty years old and works fine. It's just the cost of electricity that is getting me and why I'm going with a whole house tankless Electric Tankless Water Heater, a Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24.

I just replaced two propane 40 gallon units with new. I converted to NG. They were 25 years old but amazingly had little to no rust in the bottom of the tanks. One had some calcification deposits but the other one was almost perfect inside! Sold the pair for $100. Pull the bottom drain spigot out and see whats in the bottom of the tank. If its full of rust and other deposits, it probably has no value. If its relatively clean, you might get $25-50 for it.

Cheers

I have a real old one myself in good shape thick walls. I have kept it thinking I would make a smoker out of it... but it just takes up space!
