Old Weaver Lift + Carport

So I bought an old ‘49 Desoto to build into a full custom, chopped top, etc. Decided I’m too old to roll around on the garage floor building another project from the ground up. Went ahead bought an old Weaver AFH-72 (I think) lift for cheap. Well, really didn’t want to give up the floor space in my garage for the lift, so decided on a carport. We used to live in an old mobile home on our property until we built our house, so I had septic, water and electric on site. Figured may as well stub up the plumbing in case I’d decide to box it in and put a bathroom in at a later date... in case you haven’t figured it out yet, this car project has caused a lift project which has caused a carport project. Talk about *********** fast.

You don't see a lot of carports with a toilet installed. That's going to be a tourist attraction.

No HOA for us out here in the sticks and would probably have more wildlife peaking on you 💩ing than people. Lol. Seriously, I’m planning on boxing in a small room under the carport with a baseboard heater mainly so I can use our water well again. The house was built about the time they ran city water out here and was never hooked to the well.

So now that the slab is down, hopefully get started tearing lift apart to freshen it up and paint it. I have a question for anyone with experience with these lifts: What connects the safety on both posts? I have the parts schematic from Panzitta Sales and am only seeing the release handle (red round stock piece in my pictures) on the pump side like I have. Starting to think I’m missing a part or two...

Stripped the lifts down and am cleaning them up and painting them. The safety dogs/lever seem to simply go over center to disengage. It appears there was just a handle on both sides to disengage them. I hope to stand up the posts and start going back together soon. Although the hydraulic cylinders don’t appear to have been leaking, I may put seals in them since they are out of the posts and easily accessible.

Strapped an engine hoist in the semi retired Ford for a hillbilly tow truck and hoisted the posts upright and bolted them down. Think I’ll take the cylinders to a local hydraulic shop and see what seal replacement is going to run so leaks aren’t an issue later. Going to try and sell one of my bikes and get the carport ordered...

Most projects do cause other projects, right? Good call to rebuild the cylinders now, before you have the '49 in the air.

I like the hillbilly tow truck idea too.

James from Panzitta's here. There were two versions of this lift, a single cylinder and a two cylinder. If this is the two cylinder type, which it appears to be, there is nothing that connects the safety on the power post to the safety on the off post. You must disengage each one. On the single cylinder version the lock on the off side only engages when the chain goes slack so there is no release on the off side on that type.

That is how my Weaver is. Separate safety release on each side

Been using the lift some and enjoying it. Haven’t had time to get to the Desoto but eventually…
