Old Westinghouse motor

I,ve got this old 1/2 horse Westinghouse motor that was a pile of rust on an old Racine automatic hacksaw, on the tag it says AR inductive motor with two diagrams one for 110v and one for 220v 1 and 2 tied together 3 and 4 for 110v
Well the only metal band left on one of the wires says 1 so I hook up 1 which I call black,with 2 which I call white , then I hook up the other two red and yellow, the brushes are froze so I free them up , the motor sparks like hell when it first starts because one of the brushes is a little uneven but it wears in ,great! The only problem is it is running cc ,and no matter how else I hook up the wires , it either does nothing or seems like the motor locks up and hums ,even dims the lights .Whats wrong?

Does it say the motor is reversable on the name plate?

No just 110 & 220

I'm gonna say it's probably not reversible. Our 550v motors at work are a/c 3 phase and are reversible by switching two legs of the wiring.

And 550v never even heard of that delt with lots of 480 277 240 and 120 but that is a new one for me.

Are the brushes mounted to a movable carrier or ring that can be rotated usually a screw in the end of the motor hold the carrier from moving loosen screw and rotate brushes till motor reverses.

Yes the brushes are on a ring that can rotate! With two markings on it .think that's how it works?

3-phase motors are different than single phase. All 3-phase motors are reversable by switching 2 legs...

550V is a obsolete voltage like 110,220,440, Canada uses 600V which the rated voltage for motors & welding equipment is 575V,

Yes loosen the screws and move the plate to the other position. It should change the direction.

3 phase motors do not have brushes

it sounds like a repulsion start/ induction run motor, you change direction by moving the brushes. they are a high torque motor. I had one on a very old air compressor. google it.

YES! It worked! I painted it this morning, reassembled it this afternoon ,hooked up the wires after I moved the plate with the brushes, plugged it in and voila! Clockwise rotation! What a simple way to do this! They should all be this way, instead of having to switch wires around. Tank You so much guys ! you are the best!

A repulsion start induction run would have a brush lifting mechanism there are straight repulsion motors where the brushes stay in contact with the commutator .

No the brushes don,t come off the comm. they,re spring loaded on the ring. They were frozen in place when I first tried to start the motor,then once I freed them up it would run but cc .then you told me to turn the ring and it worked! I never would have believed it if I hadn,t seen it myself . Thank you so much!
