Any have any of these that they use for storage? I have a couple that my grandfather passed down that I use for drill bits and paint brushes. I love the way they look. Just wondering if anyone else used them...

Can you post a pic? I'm not sure what these look like. They have used metal ammo boxes for decades. How old are the wooden ones?

I just built three of the boxes like the Browning box above. They are to be gifts for my three children for Christmas. They are 24 long, 12 wide and 12 deep. I am going to paint them OD green and paint their names on them. I would say I have around 20.00 in each box.

I still see Eastern Bloc ammunition in wooden crates like that.

I saw a Remington .22 rimfire wooden crate at a flea market today. It was kinda thin and light (though I think it was original, not a repro) and there was no lid so I passed.

They aren't THAT old. I picked up a few at Northern Tool about 15 years ago. I think they are for artillery shells. I'll have to look if there is any legible writing on mine.

What I can make out (upside down) is ". . .for cannon" and ". . .projectile."

Another lifetime ago I was a 55B20 (ammo humper) in the Army Reserves. Looks like ammo boxes we had then. All kinds of ammunition in them. As I recall, small arms (M-16) ammo was in metal boxes but that was a long time ago.

Not nearly WWII. Mine looks to be from the mid '70s.

105mm Howitzer.

Correct. We unpacked hundreds of those boxes every day when I was in an artillery unit in Vietnam. Then we used the empty boxes to build whatever we needed for daily living.

I mounted ten swede ammo boxes in my '55 chebby pickup bed for two cross-country, two-lane blacktop roadtrips. I carried almost enuf spares for another truck. The old truck never broke down on me tho'

My dad has a barn full of those he bought back in the late 80s. He paid $10 a pickup load for them. I remember unloading the heavy things. The crazy man could cram about close to a 100 of them on in one load. Stacked them up about 8' high above the bed inside the cattle rack. Man, that was a pain to unload!

that metal .303 can is old ...probably 40 years old

some of the wooden ones are not that old, everyone is familiar with the metal cans you see everywhere - those come packed in a wooden crate. Even today C-4 explosives/Det cord comes in wooden crates.

the older wooden crates are the ones that are painted OD green

I've got a grenade box circa late 70's from Ft Leonard Wood that looks just like that with the rope handles. I also have a couple of wooden aerial flare boxes that are about 20" x20".
If my camera hadn't taken a dump I would post some pics. They are great storage boxes and stack well.

I've got a few WWII dated .30 cal metal ammo cans, the kind you see hung off the side of a .30 cal machine gun in the movies.

I used old WWII cases for the floor of a yurt I built and lived in for a couple years back in, oh, '69! There was actually some good wood in those boxes. That was good living...when you are young. One propane light, creek for water and the outhouse. In winter, a 3/4 mi walk in and out. Good times!

When I replaced the roof on my cottage, the whole roof was made out of broken down gun cases... guess there was lots of recycling back then... but made a very poor roof.. no boards spanned 2 rafters.... can you say a million nails.....

My neighbor built an attached garage using wooden ammo boxes. Stacked them like bricks and nailed them together. He worked at a Defense Depot so had a large supply source.

wooden boxes are still used. Mainly for 105mm Howitzer Rounds, Metal cans for most rifle and Machine Gun ammo. 155mm comes strapped on a pallet...

I picked up a couple wooden ammo boxes recently that were in brand new condition, and actually turned one of them into a gun case. Just a fun little weekend project.

I picked up a couple of WWII vintage fibreboard tubes that originally held 155mm Howitzer rounds over in France a couple of years ago, more as collectables than for any practical use.

Not to rain on a parade… I had some early ’80s Army wooden ammo boxes, but threw them out in the late ‘80s. Someone told me that they contained a somewhat hazardous chemical. Have no idea if what he was saying was true, but having my family living in the old government quarters back then was hazardous enough, so I threw them out.

ammoman.com still sells a lot of ammo delivered in the wood crates. I think most of it is Russian Wolf ammo.
No lid is not necessarily a problem.
I have seen shelving systems build, about 8 inches between shelves. Load up the ammo cases and slide them in. The rope handles are great for pulling them out!

IIRC, the metal ammo boxes with the hinges on the side instead of the end are WWII boxes. (Or was it the other way around?).
