I pulled down my bathroom light to paint and found there was no junction box, the fixture mounting plate was held up with drywall anchors.

Will the old work ceiling fan box be able to fit inside a 2x4 wall?

Just make sure you don't have any cables running along those studs and you'd be fine. stick your phone in there with the video camera and light turned on.

I have to do the same thing in my bathroom. Something about 80's houses.

I found this guy looking around online a while ago. Had to look it up again. This one is for a 10pk.

You can also get an old work round ceiling box the has flags that swing out and grip the drywall. Cheaper than the fan box, unless you have a heavy fixture.

I wouldn't use a ceiling fan box like you're showing. Way overkill for what your doing most likely. A 4" round old work box like the others said will be much easier to install.

I was able to get a look in the wall Friday night and found the plumbing vent running up the stud bay, so my original idea wasn't going to work.

The good news is there was stud was close and a pair of 1/2" plywood shims were enough to center an octagonal metal box perfectly on the wall.

There were 4 of the big plastic screw in drywall anchors holding up the previous fixture and two more holes for the fixture mounting screws and I was afraid the plastic flags on an old work box work hit the compromised drywall.

Got it painted Saturday and a simple toilet install yesterday turned into an all day event after the base inlet casting to the bowl was leaking on the floor:mad:

Haha, I'm waiting on a new light fixture yet. We couldn't find anything we liked locally.
Still need to rehang the shower curtain properly, and the new towel bar, ring and TP holder.
It'll probably be next week before I can finish.

Here's the before color and junction hole in the wall.
