It was Old World Day, today, at the Pawns.

First, some flea action, picked up 500 US Sockets ( -- nearly 60 pounds -- ), but a Facom 27mm and several Hazets were in there alongside a few unnamed West German ones.

Anyway, stopped at the nearest pawn, a Cash America. They had a nice little torque wrench, it seems that their standard payout for them is $20 (AEEE), but I picked this one up a little cheaper than the Snap-On yesterday -- the had $39.99 on it but the woman who helped me, without my asking, got her supervisor to knock off 25%, so I was out the door for about 32 bucks.

The wrench is a Facom J.208-50.... :)

After that success, I had a few in and out stops, not too much around, but I was craving some metricity after 2 hours of digging through mostly SAE sockets. So I stopped off and picked up those USAG ring wrenches I've been wanting -- 12 wrenches, 6mm to 32mm, satin finish handles with polished rings. Shop owner was convinced they were German but he worked with me a little on price so I was willing to allow him his opinion. I also picked up the little Genius 1/4" drive set that caught my eye on that last trip.

Final stop netted a third torque wrench, this one a Proto, for a pretty good price. I should have all my ranges covered, now!

At this point, I'm outta cash, so I'm gonna give the fleas and pawns time to reload. If I can sell off a few things out of the garage, I'll be back.

Happy hunting to all!

I like the look of the bucket-o-sockets. It looks like a treasure chest.

I can tell you, it is! Spent about two hours combing through bins of sockets, pulling all the US-made that weren't Craftsman. Owner and I couldn't meet on a bulk price, so he counted them all out, and wanted more than I would pay. So I sorted them by drive size and got him to see it my way -- then dumped them back into the bucket.

At the next stop, the guy is an SK dealer and proud of his brand, so I left all of those behind and pulled a little higher-quality lower-quantity lot, those 90 aren't even shown in the pic!

Looking forward to sorting, I'm quite sure I can fill out my SK sets and imagine I'm pretty close to a lot more -- all told I must have close to a thousand US sockets floating about.

On the day it ended up at about 30 cents per socket - but at least two of the 'ringers' add up to $40 retail, so it's better than that. The socket bins had water in them, so I'm not sure that if I didn't pick these up, they wouldn't move on to the great rust pile in the sky soon enough.

Good Gawd man, you must have more sockets than bolts around your house! :bounce:

Let's not even talk about the nuts here. :)

About 400 of the sockets are 'functional' -- I have the Craftsman 299-piece set in my tool wall and a bunch of others in various boxes.

But something like 7-800 vintage sockets that I'm piecing into sets. Should have several SK/SK-Wayne/SK-Tool, and should be close on Indestro, Sparta, various flavors of Proto, Wright, Williams, "Mustang", and countless others.

We used to sell those USAG 283 wrenches for about a $100.00 a set twenty years ago

Who says prices are rising? ;-) About where I walked out.

The current 283N set runs 157 Euros (~$210) on the Italian website.

I don't think I could put together a comparable set under $100, certainly not from Craftsman open stock.
