Hey

I’m looking for another vise to restore can anyone help with any info on this old yost? I guess it’s a 33 but that’s all I get from the post and the pic. Like to know the year and what would be a decent price to buy it at?

the swivel base looks intriguing to me.
Thanks,

That is an old one with that base. I wonder if it has a wing nut below the table to lock the swivel base. One question is does it have all the pipe jaws? Probably OK deal at $125 to me, but prices vary widely and demand is high.

Yikes they want $220 down from $400! Looks like it’s missing at least one pipe jaw

If you have a need for a vise that big and durable, that is a bargain.

Pipe jaws on that type of vise often get in the way of clamping regular work. That is why they are so often missing. Get a real pipe vise and leave the pipe jaws out of the "combination" vise. You will be happy you did. Used pipe vises are easy to find and cheap on Craigslist and the like.

My local auto repair shop went through three imported vises in two years. I felt sorry for them and gave them a 4 inch Morgan five years ago, and it doesn't show any wear yet!

I don’t “need” a vise I just like to restore them for fun. I got the itch last year and now I’m addicted, though this won’t make me any money on resale because I want to keep them all.

I understand your illness. It's gotten to the point where I have been forced to sell a few.

My area is saturated with old vises. A Yost like this one, if it has both pipe jaws, no breaks, welds, or repairs, would fetch about $125 - $150. A fire sale price around here would be 50 bucks. Those deals come up regularly, especially on good restoration candidates.

Thanks for the info I will continue to check on it hopefully they come down in price.
I’ve also been looking at a Morgan Chicago 40 and a Parker 102-3 any idea which is “better” I’m thinking the Morgan and they want $80 right now

I'm no expert, but I like the Morgan better too. $80 for a stout old vise seems like a good deal.

Be sure to check it well for damage.

You can't go wrong with either of those two manufacturers. I like Morgans just as much as any other and for 80 bucks asking price, you might walk away with a 65 dollar deal. As noted, don't fall in love before you carefully inspect the entire vise. There are countless tales of getting home only to find that the awesome deal you just scored is really just a boat anchor.

Lucky for you. Old vises are not thick on the ground in my area. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever seen a Yost for sale here; Reed are also scarce. Parker, Morgan, Rock Island, Columbian are more likely to be found.

It's hardly luck. It's downright torture because I want to drag them all home. :)

I can’t seem to find a reed for under $250 or a Wilton bullet for less than $400!

Foreman05: I've seen several Reed 104 vises in pretty good condition on Ebay, Facebook and Craigslist over the last month or so. All were fairly priced at around $100. I allready have picked up two or more Reed 104's, so I have not pursued any others..
The 104 is a very useful and well made vise.. Not a 'big boy' like a 6" or larger one.. but a useful, practical size..
