OCG!!! You are the man. You have to be the most importance guy here on the fourm. I to own a machine shop and cnc machines as well. I like useing the older machines as well. I know what you have there. To everybody that reads his threads and posts there can't be anybody but him his self working in his shop. The only way I could go in his shop is to be naked.

christ, your attic looks like an airplane hanger!

Only a model plane could land in there. It's only 16' wide by 50' long.

I always work with clothes on. And never ask guests to remove theirs! LOL :bounce:

Ever time I step into one of my Toy Shops, a smile instantly appears on my face. And I feel a deep sense of accomplishment. That this is my reward for fifty years that I've worked so hard to create. My little slice of heaven found here on Earth. That I thank the Good Guy Upstairs every day for giving me yet another day to enjoy...

Old car guy, love your shop and enjoy your retirement, when I show up at a gas station in one of my cars I tell kids there to get an education and to work hard, that's how you earn the right to drive a nice vehicle.

Can't wait to see all your toy cars in their new garage of garages....Also keep us posted on the boat as summer is coming up. Where is it docked?

OCG,

Inspirational shop.
I am dying to see some of the parts you create with all of your tooling.
I am in awe of the tooling, parts and pattern making of the early years.
I even collect them.
Here is one from my collection that you may enjoy.
This is an old wood pattern made around the late 40's to early 50's

Keep up the great work and I hope you enjoy your retirement. I admire your work ethic.

I buried 2" diameter PVC conduit 36" deep with LB’s when it came out of the ground at all my garages. Then pulled 1" diameter double braided black hose through.

Nice rolling library ladder, OCG. When you post, I read! I just did a thermostat in a 2003 Blazer today, my shop is shaping up bit by bit, new craftsman 8 drawer toolbox, cleaning and organizing, painting, a shadow of what you've done but I can see the payoff-it's a pleasure working in a shop that is neat, organized, and basically something like yours!!

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what are LB's

The plastic conduit is a great idea was the hose a steel reinforced like used on big rig's?

any particular reason for doing it like this as opposed to just piping the air?

This is an LB. It opens up so you can pull your cord/hose through it and make sharp 90's.

Hey OCG,

Everything looks great. I'm a young car guy who is just finishing up his first car project: complete swap of everything from a rusted 240sx to a clean body 240sx.

I looked through your thread and a couples questions came to mind. I hope you don't mind teaching.

That EDM machine. I read your description on earlier in the thread. You mentioned that it's used to cut out complex shapes. What can it do that a modren CNC machine can't?

Your Bridgeport CNC machine, is it 2 axis? Do you usually only use to make brackets?

What is an Optical Comparator?

What's the difference between a mill and a drill press?

Lastly, why so many drill presses? Is it just because you like toys or can one do something that the other cannot?

Thanks in advance

Hey OCG,

I looked through your thread and a couples questions came to mind. I hope you don't mind teaching.

That EDM machine. I read your description on earlier in the thread. You mentioned that it's used to cut out complex shapes. What can it do that a modren CNC machine can't?

First off an EDM Machine can machine hardened steel,, even carbide. Just as easy as soft steel. I can even EDM an internal thread in a hardened block of steel. Another example what a CNC machine cannot accomplish would be to machine a thin rib with any depth.

Your Bridgeport CNC machine, is it 2 axis? Do you usually only use to make brackets?

Yes my Bridgeport is a 2 axis CNC. And I cannot cut three dimensional parts. I rely on my Deckel Pantograph to do all my three dimensional work. But the CNC Bridgeport can make any irregular cutter paths in a single plane. Such as circular, angular, and oval or all in combination. And example I could do engraving of numbers and the alphabet.

What is an Optical Comparator?

An Optical Comparator uses a system of light, mirrors and lenses to measure a part. That projects a magnified silhouette of the part on a screen. I have a 10:1 lenses, so object appears ten time the original size. You simple measure it, divide by ten. And that’s what size the part is. With the surface illuminator, a reflection of the surface of the object (like a quarter) is projected on the screen.

What's the difference between a mill and a drill press?

Lastly, why so many drill presses? Is it just because you like toys or can one do something that the other cannot?

The spindle on a milling machine is designed to take side thrust. So that you can cut on the side of a cutter. Hence to term milling. You can also accurately position the workpiece under the spindle. Or move it mechanically in three directions. To accomplish the cutter path.

A milling machine can drill holes like a drill press. But a drill press is handier to use and usually a bit faster. But if you need to accurately position the holes, you’ll need a mill. Or a cross slide table on a drill press.

Why I have so many drill presses? I have to wonder that myself at times. Life’s full of opportunities of sort. The Craftsman I purchased at a garage sale for a few dollars over 40 years ago. It’s small and easy to take anywhere. The bench model Delta is a heirloom that I cannot part with. But does get regular use. The floor model Delta I purchased from a local member from another forum. Good to drill holes in taller items. The radial drill press is another story. I’m very fond of radials. And when I came across this Sharp, I couldn’t pass it up. It has a strong gear head drive that I can drill 3" diameter holes. I’ve used it last month to drill a bunch of 7\16" diameter holes 24" deep.

Thanks in advance

It's just makes life a lot easier to make a part with the right machine or combination of machines.

I never downplay a college education. One may have been able to do well for themselves in my day. But it has to be a thousand times more difficult today.

My cars have been shown at the CCCA Stan Hywet and Eye’s on Design. More than likely you have seen them there. But unfortunately I won’t be on the Snapper’s summer tour in Bardstown, Kentucky.

Just think how many more cars you could fit in there if you took all those machines out.

Your set-up is larger than most main dealer workshops over in the UK. The garden of the house I'm buying is about 70' x 28' in which I intend to build a 26' x 26' garage to house my 3 British classic cars (we make 'em smaller over here, less room you see?).

I know you've worked hard for everything you have and I admire you for it. I've worked hard for the past 25 years and now I'm back to stage one following an expensive divorce. My cars are my passion now, except when I'm wiith my beautiful kids.

I take my hat off to you Sir :)

OCG where was your old house when I was relocating to NE Ohio? :wtf: LOL

I spent a great deal of time searching for a smaller house, with a 4 or 6 car garage, with no luck. Had to settle on a 4BR, 3CG, which is a little much house for a single guy :D

I read the entire garage post, great read! I'm now inspired to do some researching/price comparisons for a lift now.

OCG, I saw in your post that you mention your old house and your new house. Were all the pictures of your new house and garage? Or did I confuse some old garage pictures thinking they were your new garage? Did you move to a new city or just a new house? What part of Ohio are you in?

There were no pictures of my old house in this thread. But there are a few pictures on the first pages that shows some of my machinery in my old garage machine shop before I moved them into my new place. And a picture machining the end trucks to my bridge crane on a Bridgeport. Other than that I don’t recall any others...

Yes I did move to a new city. My old house was just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. While my new house is halfway between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio.
