I got one of these garage door openers from 1995. I cant find the model number; Sears Best, 2 lights, 1/2HP, round green program button & chain drive. It doesn't work with any of the 2012 Buick Lacrosse 3-buttons. But I was able to find one original worn out 3-button remote (model 139.53779) that has a 12-volt battery. I was able to clear all old remotes and re-program this one remote without an issue. But still cant get the Buick to program to it. I think they were made by Chamberlain? So I guess my question is that there are different generation of Craftsman openers that can be identified by the color of the program button? So older openers wont work with the newer cars? Is there a chart somewhere that shows the different generation of openers and their compatibility?

A lot of the Craftsman openers were made by Chamberlain. Chamberlain has gone through 2 different "upgrades" to their wireless remotes that, if I recall correctly, changed the frequencies that the openers operate at. I have all three generations in my shop. Chamberlain sells a radio receiver that will allow newer remotes to operate the older doors.
I have a green Sears in my shop.
I got 4 remotes (2 full size and 2 "fob" sized) for it off e-bay with no problems.
The radio boards are interchangeable and there is a DIY industry of rebuilder and swappers.
I learned a lot from their sites and blogs.
My opener was originally a "red" but the radio didn't work.
I got the green board from a free craigslist broken opener with one working remote.
I swapped the radio boards and have had no problems.
(The "broken" one was the common stripped plastic gear.
It is sitting, waiting to be needed, in the corner.)
With a metal garage door the range is short.
I need to be right at the door for it to work.

The built in remotes the cars have should be able to read and be programmed for your opener. Patience is key. Follow the owners manual to a t and you should be ok.

Another option is to use a universal remote control that has a switch-contact on its output - you connect it in parallel with the hard-wired control button circuit on the opener. Plenty of these can be found online.

Mom had an older sears opener, probably the same vintage, and it would not program to her Lexus. It was probably a 2012 model or newer
