Older MAC roller cabinet, thoughts on fair price?

A fellow is selling a SnapOn upper and MAC roller toolbox on craigslist, along with some tools. I picked up a couple of items from him, but I already have a used SnapOn KRA2007 roller box and a 6-drawer Craftsman roller, so I didn’t need the boxes.

But I noticed they’re still on CL, and I was wondering about the MAC roller box. It’s 25 years old, and isn’t mint condition, but the drawers opened nicely when I looked through it. (It’s probably 33-36 inches wide.) Here’s a picture:

It’s not quite as beat up as the pic seems to show, and the SnapOn upper unit is also nicer in person than what you see there. He’s asking $475 for the pair, and I’m wondering what a fair price might be for just the MAC? He’s open to separate offers for both units. Wondering what your opinions were, and thanks.

I looked far and wide for a similar sized, Old style toolbox for home and NOBODY on craigslist was ever selling a box that size for 50 bucks. maybe if you run into an old woman who wants it out of her garage, yes. but online, No.

i finally settled for 650 or 700 (i forget at the moment what it was), for this 80's (?) Matco cabinet that has friction slides, but they work very nicely.

Id buy that thing for 450 bucks if i didnt already have too many boxes

I'd go $200 on the Mac bottom if he has the key. Also if it has ball bearing drawer slides I'd go up to $50 more.

there is some (limited) demand for that top box.

if the right person comes along, you may be able to get $250 or so for the top.

some people love those top boxes... :headscrat

i have both a kra637 and kr537a, for at home/garage use they are fine, i wouldnt try to work out of one.

just my $0.02

yOU WOUOLD BE ABLE TO GET $200 for the top box if you had a LONG time to sell at and would be licky to get $150 for the bottom. That is in the Southeast. I can't imagine it being much different anywhere else.

That Snap On box in the Omaha CL ad is a lot different than the one in the OP's post. The Omaha Snap On box is a simple 5 drawer box, the one in the OP's post is a KR-537, which has twelve drawers.

OP, $200-250 is a fair price for the MAC roller. For $200, you won't regret it. I'd try and talk him down to $400 for the pair. That top Snap On box is like the one in my signature line that I restored. I sold one in pretty good condition a couple years ago for $300.

Back2Class, there are guys in other parts of the country that would kill to get those kind of deals in your neck of the woods. Another thing I've noted, being on the Atlanta CL several times a day, is the only Snappy boxes I've seen at all the last few months have been either large rollers, or large combos. Regular tool chests or rollers have been few and far between...for whatever reason. :wtf:

I plain disagree, I managed to find this pic of a snap-on box I once owned. It took me months to sell. I put it online and on ebay. ended up getting $600, maybe $650. It was in nice shape. That was in CT where millions of people were just a few miles away and when the economy was doing much better.

I know I would not get even $600 for this now, and that missmatched mess is worth a heck of alot less, be it north, south, 2005 or 2011. Very small market for old boxes like that Mac base. I firmly believe in any market he would be hard pressed to get $200 for it. Still, I say $150 for the bottom and figure $175 for the top. $325 is not too far from his asking. But that represents a fair price IMHO not even a good deal.

I think a lot of folks decide they want a box, look at CL adds for a day or a few hours and base their idea of value on that. What they are seeing is the stuff that is not selling, watch the CL adds for a month in your area. The good deals and ones that are selling are not up more than once and don't last long. The "real market" for boxes is much less visible than what you see listed on CL at one given moment.

I appreciate all the feedback and opinions from anyone. For what it's worth, the ad's still up and the seller hasn't replied to my inquiries about whether he'd consider $200 for the MAC roller. I left the door open for further talks but haven't heard back. He may have decided to keep it, I don't know. In fairness to him, the box is in better shape than the lousy picture would indicate.

I'm surprised it took a long time to sell your SnapOn combo for $650. Where I am (SF Bay Area) it would have sold pretty quick. When the CL ad came up for the KRA2007 I have now I had to move very fast to get it. I paid $300 for it, it's got a few paint scratches and small dents on the side, but the drawers work great. The guy was selling another KRA2007 in better shape for $500 and it was gone before I could get there. Just as well, I'm perfectly happy with the one I have.

I've also noticed the smaller MAC/SO/Matco cabinets come up for sale less often than the larger boxes, not sure why. And your advice about watching CL for a while to find out the true value of boxes (or anything else you're interested in) is dead-on right.

I just go by what I see...and what I read on here. Like I said, I haven't seen any regular sized Snap On boxes on the local CL lately. And I'm always reading threads like this where people from New Jersey, Kansas, Montana, etc. will jump in and say "I'd kill for that box at that price. We never see those kind of deals around here."

I don't disagree here. As a test, I'm going to start another thread with a box combo I bought recently to see what people would value it at.

And btw, that combo you sold does look pretty nice. ;)
