Well I have unsuccessfully been searching for parts for an older Mac tool box. The box has the handles that say mac in them. Its similar to the one in the picture but its a nine drawer unit with five of the nine drawers being small and located up top.

Well if you all can help me locate the entire lock assembly and the stops for the drawer slides. I do need a single set of slides but can manage without them,
Josh

The stops for the sliders are pretty universal. Just some clips. Are you missing the lock assembly or just don't have a key for it? Handles I can't help you with.

He added a pic and it looks more like the 30" wide models they had for awhile. When the Matco was building them for Mac in the late 70's IIRC. Thats a nice box. I had a Matco version with the top and bottom awhile back.

Mine was marked MB-910

I don't know the model number due to the fact I can't find where its located. The entire lock assembly is missing, the bar that attachs to the lock is present though.

Gravygrabber: If you could please inform me on where to purchase the universal stops i would greatly appreciate it.

where to purchase the universal stops

show us a photo of what you are looking for. Waterloo made at least half the tool boxes sold in the US over the past fifty years. Their clips fit many boxes.

I'd flip the unit around and it should be stamped on the top of the back side of the box... or else along the bottom edge. However most bottom boxes are stamped at the top.

Should look something like this...

Here are pictures of the actual box. Please note that there are absolutely no tumblers. I have look for the model number stamp all over even flipping it over but to no avail.

Those are a pretty basic style lock.. should be able to pick one up at most hardware stores. There is a long shaft that should fit into the back of the lock and turns the lock rod in the back up/down as you turn it.

As for slides.. those are a pretty standard for that period of box. Its a friction slide and I'm not sure who's selling them anymore these days. I'm sure someone could point you in the right direction?

The stops you are refering to are just the "clips" that keep the drawers from pulling all the way out right? They are a little bent piece of metal.. basically a spring clip. These should be the same design C-man, etc is still using today on friction slide boxes. Might contact Kennedy or Waterloo about those since I'm 99% sure they still make those style clips for their boxes.

As for the handles.. honestly those will be hard to come by. Every now and then I see them show up on ebay as singles or pairs or even a whole drawer. Actually there were 3 of the 6" wide drawers from a top box on ebay not too long ago.

Like others have said those clips just keep the box from coming all the way out. Technically you can take one from each side and have one clip on each drawer if you're short and it will keep the drawer from falling out but it will tilt slightly at full extension. I did that with an old Mac box.
I doubt a locksmith can help you. The above box I was just talking about came with no keys except for the side locker. I basically shaved tumblers on the other two lock cylinders to "make" my key work. It worked just fine but not sure how pickable it is now. Still it locks, etc..
I would try and get some locks that will just fit the hole and accept the lockbar. If Mac can't get you some ask them to try and get you something close. If that doesn't work go online to Baton lock and I know they should have something.

Josh,

Just for grins I spun through World Salvage or whatever the name of the place that used to be Cummins tools in KC is on my way home. I was specifically looking for handles for you. Low and behold.. they have an entire bucket of them for $0.50 each.. BUT.. they say Remline on them and not Mac. Dunno if you are looking to replace just a couple or all of them. Maybe yours are repairable?

Hi all, just joined the group. I been reading old post and also have and old Mac Tool box. My brother gave it to me a few years back and he got it from my Dad. I thinking it is from the 70s. I will look tonight to see if there is a model number so I can find out more about it. It is just a spare box.

Saw this beauty on Craigslist Detroit today. They were asking $2000 for it... way too high priced though.

Josh, here is a MATCO set I bought new in 1979, the next is a top box I picked up last year I made a new drawer front for that on in the upper left and replaced the handle (Ebay) this summer I will refinish the rest of the front of this box. Last week I picked up this middle box (MAC) it will need a complete refinish in the near future. In this time frame these boxes were made by MATCO and Sold by both MATCO and MAC.
Last year I tried both matco and MAC to get replacement drawer stops with no luck. I picked up a Craftsman Industral lower box it was missing a couple of the stops. I got on line and searched the sear site for replacements which were no longer avaiable, BUT they had a replacement, so down the Sears repair center and got them, got home and compaired the to the MATCO one and guess what?
They were the same Part # M3163

Hi guys, very good reading here! I'm new to this forum and instead of starting a new thread I thought I would post here.

I recently got an older MAC tool chest/ roller combo. I'm in the process of restoring it.

My question is if anyone might know where the stampings would be or a ball park of when that style was being sold. I can't seem to find the numbers on it, and I litterally have all the paint stripped off the outside. Just thought I would ask before I start flipping it up side down and pulling drawers.

I attached a photo of the tool box(sorry for quality), I forgot to measure the width, but I would guess between 28-35 inches overall.

Thank you for any input.

Late '70s, early '80s generally. Check the back, esp. the corners...and check in natural daylight.

What's with the Snap On insignia on the Mac boxes?! :headscrat

Thank you for the information. I'm not really sure what the motivation was for that. If I wanted a Snap-On tool box I would buy one. Anyways that logo is gone now. Its too bad really sice it didn't have the original logo inside.

Well I found the numbers. I had to sand the paint off but they are there. Thanks for the help. Slides are still available and I had some replaced under a life time warranty. The MAC logos were ordered off a current drop front service chest and look great. Due to rust, I stripped the paint off it and repainted the top and bottom.

Thanks again.

Hi guys, new member here. Somewhere here I read about someone having problem opening a Mac box without a lock or key. I myself recently had my MB1700 Series (80's vintage?) lock tumbler unattach itself from the lock rod after 20 plus years of faithful service in the locked position.
The locking rod works by the key and screwed on tumbler by turning and the bent/angled part of the rod turns and lifts a hinged plate and two plates that have tangs that grab the wall of the back of the drawers.
Now there are two ways to open your box and they require some nerves and patience to not destroy your valuable box.

1: Put two wedges between the top drawer and the box frame, like you were trying to see what's inside at both ends basically pushing down on the drawer. The wedges can be wood, plastic, or even two thick screwdrivers. Wedge them in about 4 inches from the ends of the drawer. Here's where the nerves come in, next gently...I repeat gently pry the drawer out with two big flat screwdrivers with steady but gentle and firm pressure. What your doing is carefully popping the drawer from the "tangs" that "lock" the drawer. Once you pop the drawer open, you take it out so you can reach and turn the rod to unlock the other drawers. Remove a few drawers to access the locking mechanism. If you still have the lock or a replacement, reassemble the lock assembly and be sure to use Loctite on the threads to keep the assembly from coming apart again. Reinstall drawers and leave unlocked for 24 hours so Loctite sets up.

2: If you have just a bottom box or remove the top box, in the middle of it on top, right next to the lip, drill a 1/8" to 1/4" hole through the top of box. Then make a sturdy rod with a small "L" at one end and feed it through that hole, turn the rod so that the "L" catches the flat hinge release and pull up. It only needs to be lifted an inch or so, maybe. While holding it up, open your drawers. Then follow the removal of drawers and reassembly instructions.

Using these techniques, I can get into one of these boxes in less than 15 minutes with no damage. The hole method may be better for some if only they know the hole is there for that purpose. As it can be covered many ways.

I hope this helps someone in a similar situation.

I too have been searching for clips and a lock. Tech support determined that my box (lower) was from 1972 and was made by Matco when the were together with MacTools. The clips he believes I need are part#XCS-A. $24.00 for a 10 pack and no luck with the lock. Looks like a push type from an old file cabinet might work. Here's some pics (ignore the metal tab coming out from the lock hole, it keeps the lock rod from jamming up the draw with no lock in place)

Mine is idetical except it's a Matco box. I have the lock/key, but it does not work. Let me know if you get one. Here's a pic of mine. It's the same type with the 9 drawers. I really like it.

Hey y'all, just lucked into a great mac box last weekend but can't seem to find a serial on it anywhere. Seems to be the same era as everyone else's in this thread. Anyone have an idea about the middle and lower boxes?

For stops on the older Mac boxes with friction slides, they are also available from Waterloo for $1.09 each. While Waterloo did not build the mac boxes, almost all the friction slides came from the same vendor, so stops will fit Craftsman, mac, matco and most snapon box with the friction slide.
I have a mac mb520 from the 70's and it is an orange color, almost an Allis Chalmers tractor orange. It is almost like a pumpkin orange. It had been in a tire shop all it's life and came from Mac in that color. I was not aware that the older mac boxes were ever painted any color but red.
anybody out there ever come across the older mac boxes in any color than red. I know in the late 80's they came in different colors, but the box I have was made in mid 70's.

That's a pretty good tip on the waterloo sliders. I was thinking of heading out to the sears return and repair spot to grab some as I need one for the top box too. If anyone sees a good matching Mac top box around or happens to live in texas and wants to ship me one I found online there.
