Hi everyone. I'm glad I found this site, it's great! I bought an older Matco lower and upper tool box about 7 years ago and im still trying to find out more information about it. Well the other night I was taking pictures of it to sell but after looking it over and finding this site I think I would like to restore it.

The box feels solid and really only needs pain. One thing I didn't like was the drawer layout. I don't think I can change them around. So if anyone has any information on my box it would be greatly appreciated if I could find out more.

Thanks everyone Shawn

From what I've been finding it seems like a durable paint would be the rustoleum line. Hate to go through the work for nothing ya know?

If your going to strip it and repaint it, don't use spray paint. If you want a good quality finish, use automotive paint. You can go with companies like PPG, DuPont, or BASF, but there really expensive. Seeing as how it's a tool box and it's not going to be out in the weather, I'd go with an Acrylic urethane kit from paintforcars.com. You can get a gallon of paint, the reducer for it, the activator, and several accessories for under $100.00 This is what you should go with. check it out www.paintforcars.com

Yeah the bottom corner and behind some of the drawer pulls the paint has flaked off and there is some surface rust.

Does anyone have an idea on the year? I searched but nothing came up for me. Thanks

Maybe the whole thing doesn't need to be done and I can take care of the troublesome spots to avoid alot of unnecessary work. But trying to match the paint on the other hand...

judging by that it has a SN plate instead of a stamping, and the newer type drawer pulls, i'd guess mid-late 90's

Thank you. Like I said I can probably just fix the few spots where the paint flaked off and the rust is only surface rust

I have the same box, but just the lower portion. It's stout and tough as hell.

Almost sold it a while back but glad I kept it.

I have the older version with handles. On mine, the big center drawer on the top box can be moved by swapping with three of the small drawers

Dead thread but thought I'd put up this scan from the 89 catalog for future reference.
