I managed to find and older Rem Line machinist chest. I have not been able to find any like it either here in The Garage Journal or anywhere else online.

Overall it is in very good condition for its age. All the drawers work smoothly and the finish on it only has some minor scratches and scuffing. Nothing that would make me consider doing anything more to it then giving it a good bath and a little polishing.

The one thing it has me scratching my head is the fact that the drawers look like they have a spray-on green felt like flocking material. Has anybody ever seen anything like this and is it something that is durable enough to withstand normal use due to its age?

Also, I am wondering about the approximate date of it's manufacture. I have not been able to find much on Rem Line boxes that are older then the late 60s. Does anybody no an approximate date for this box? From the style and its construction, I am guessing it is probably from the mid 1950s or maybe even earlier.20191203_081933.jpeg20191203_081906.jpeg20191203_081944.jpeg20191203_082151.jpeg20191203_082252.jpeg20191203_082546.jpg

I saw that box on Craigslist. I'm unsure if Remington Metal Products in Ohio was sold to or has any affiliation with Advertising Metal Display of Chicago, IL. AMD is who made the nice red and gray boxes that we're used to seeing here on Garage Journal.

Great looking & interesting box! I'd assume that's a helluva lot of box to drag around from a top handle when full!

Thehorse: I have no idea, I can't really find any detailed timeline of the company and any subsequent sales and moves from location to location. I have read that they later manufactured the Stack-On brand of metal tool boxes but also know that they were still making the Rem Line brand concurrently. This was in the mid 1980s. You must have a wide search area for CL [emoji16] I have enough trouble being able to run half an hour one way from home to look at anything. Anything further than that and I'm pretty much out of the game unless somebody is willing to hold an item for a couple of days or longer if it is out of state. For out-of-state items I have to try and coordinate with a couple of friends who drive for a living to try to pick things up.

Outofbounds: It has that potential...as does any metal box. It is 11" tall, 16-1/4" wide, and 8-1/2" deep. Empty it weighs in at 25 pounds.

Toolmaker65, I've seen flocking used in place of felt fabric on some wood cases for tooling and measuring instruments, in particular, cases that have complex shapes routed out to accept various parts or attachments. I restored one oak case for a Minuteman broaching set and replaced the original flocking with green flocking material bought on-line and 3M spray adhesive. I think it would withstand normal use reasonably well.

I roam the quad state area on the regular (PA/MD/VA/WV). For anything out of that area, I have a pretty good network of fellow tool addicts, friends and family.

Current space limitations and winter projects issued to me by Mrs. Horsey are the only reasons why that box is at your house instead of mine.
