Older Saylor-Beall Compressor - Good price?

I'm in need of a compressor for working around the garage. For the most part it won't be used for big jobs, but on occasion it would be nice to have for that.

Ran across this one on CL for $200. My garage is not wired for 220v, but I know people who could help me do it.

Good deal or not? Would it be overkill for what I need?

I should have called on it right away when I saw it. It's been listed for nearly 24 hours now. I will call in the morning and see if I can't go take a look.

I'm not real familiar with electrical. How difficult would it be to hook up if it was 3 phase?

It's still available! I asked if the tank was rusted at all and all he said was that it's 50 years old. Not sure if that's a good sign...

I have no idea how the hell I would move it. He said it's 600 lbs...any ideas? I'll go look at it this afternoon.

If it's three phase you'd need a converter or change out the motor to single phase. Take the pump and motor off and load in three pieces. Let us know.

Rent a Penske truck with a per lift gate too get that home. Put some 2x4 under the feet and use lag bolts. Not too difficult.

Sorry I bought the compressor. I found your post while I was looking up a manual for the unit. I is very greasy but is in good shape. I will steam clean it and restore it back to new shape with what ever it needs. They still make these here in st johns mi.

Single with a newer Marathon motor. A REAL 5hp motor not a "up to" 5hp motor. It was snowing when I picked it so it still loaded on the trailer but will do more with it tomorrow. Did talk with Dennis at Saylor- Bealle and he was very helpful with a few questions I had in it.

They are great machines. I bought a used one 5 years ago from a salvage yard in NJ. About 170 mile drive but well worth it. Paid $250 for it. Will never need another compressor in my lifetime. The Saylor-Beall folks are also very good to deal with, and very prompt service. It is a ball-buster to move though at about 700 lbs.

That's less that 12 a day average, it's not that hard with all the questions people ask, but I'm very diversified in my knowledge and experience.

Darn you for beating me! It probably would have been a hassle for me anyways, so maybe it is best. Certainly a steal though. After I posted it on here I got to looking for similar ones on CL...found nothing anywhere near that price!

But I am curious how you loaded/unloaded it.

engine puller to load. I removed the motor and steam cleaned the rest. Got it home removed the pump, wiring and pipe plugs and back to the car wash to hose out I would say 7 inches of sludge from the bottom of the tank. it was 47 years of comp oil, rust flakes and dirt that would not drain. I removed the fitting so it would wash out good with some strong cleaner. solvent tanked all of the parts today. Removed the valves and fond carbon and the hp side valve was a little worn. I will sand and paint the tank tomorrow and order a rebuild kit for the valves and maybe I will re-ring it. The cylinder looks perfect. have not decided yet.

I have the new valves in it. Gave it a test run and it takes about 9 min to pressurize from 0 to 145. does this sound slow? I did not re-ring it it did not look glazed. just looking for comments.
