Hello fellow enthusiasts!
I am wondering if you experts out there could help me come up with a good value for this older Snap on box and contents. I posted a wanted ad on the marketplace and a nice guy messaged me about buying his dads older snap on box with side cabinet and some of the tools inside. I have never owned anything this big or nice. I have one KRA box that is pretty rough from the 80's I believe. This was his dads box when he was a mechanic and he wants to sell it and start fresh I guess. All he told me about it is it needs cleaned and lubricated. I would love to make him an offer and if nothing else, get it cleaned up and see if I like it and if not, maybe flip it? He lives 3 hours away and neither of us really know what its worth haha I would go check it out in person but where he is so far away, I'd like to get a general idea before I make the trip instead of showing up today and still don't know what its worth in person :)
Any help would be great. Thank you!
And without knowing everything in the box, and what he is going to keep, if any of you were to throw out a very ballpark idea on the value of the tools in the photos, that would be cool too. I guess I am trying to come up with an offer for everything in the pictures.

People ask $1000 for just the main box in what they say is good shape. If it was taken care of maybe but I'm pretty sure this is a friction slider which if cared for work fine and if not it's a bit of work to clean up.

Is he including the tools? If he wants some but not all figure that part out first. Went to look at an ad for a similar thing give the guy and offer, he tells me he'll think about it. Contacts me a few days later saying ok, go to pick it up and all the good stuff was gone. Told him my new price and he didn't understand why they price was lower than agreed.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Zewnten. I may shoot him a lower offer because it does look well used and not "shiny" so it would probably be a lot of work to clean up. He probably wont accept it, but if he does, then it will be good. Does a guy need to worry about a serial number or making sure something is paid off? I would be shocked if this wasn't paid off where it is quite a bit older, but I worry about buying something and having it come back to bite me some how. Thanks!!

Actually, that looks like a pretty lean toolset to me. Socket drawer isn't fully populated, wrenches are a jumble. Not every drawer is shown, but I'm not seeing a full, complete toolset in that collection, really.

So, it needs a closer look, I think. I can't see all the brands on all the tools, either, so...

I see a lot of sets like that one on Marketplace and Craig's list. Nice tool box, but what's inside is sort of a hodge podge. So, I don't know what it's worth. Could be a great bargain or a great disappointment, I think. I think you need to see it up close and get a more complete sense of what all you're buying.

Box looks pretty nice personally I wouldn't be interested in many of the tools. Hard to say from pics but don't see many complete sets of anything, see alot of harbor freight wrenches, some craftsman. I bought a used Snapon 40" box (top and roll chest) that was full of tools for $1000 once. Replaced all the slides in box that was about $300-$400 IIRC. Sold off most of the tools which were about 75% truck tools (Snap-on, MAC and MATCO) and made back what I put into it and then some. Still have that box works well but a bit overloaded ATM. Hard to say what a fair price would be I think anything under $1000 would be a good deal tools included. Maybe $700-$800 for the box if it's in decent shape. Probably worth more just saying what I'd be willing to spend on it. Good luck!

Those older boxes are pretty sturdy. I have the one some refer to as a Coke machine. Its a top and bottom box plus a small side box. I paid $1000 with tools about 8 years ago. It was full of body dust and some of the tools were ****** but there were a lot of gems in it as well. That being said the box would probably go for $700-$800 around here empty. Upwards of $1000 if it is in very good working condition and has keys.

In some ways it depends on where you live and the market around you. You are saying it is 3 hours out to go see it and given, the as noted by others, the odd brand mix of tools for a supposed "mechanic" to me it looks like the tools have been cherry picked. In my area folks would probably be asking $700 - $1000 for the box only. The tools on initial look don't look to add a whole lot of value but that is me. Around me driving 3 hours to look at something like that isn't happening unless a really smoking deal of some kind even then given my local market I am probably not making that trip. Like I said in my opinion really depends on your local market and availability.

Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it! I don’t know if I will make an offer or not. Thanks for taking the time to give me some advice. :)

I'd be somewhere on the south side of $800 based on the pictures. Looking at it in person might change that number significantly, really hard to say from the pictures if there's much value in the tools or not.

I wouldn't waste three hours driving to look at that unless I already had an agreement to buy it for the value of the box alone.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to drop a line to thank everyone for their input on this. It was a long transaction in the end, but I drove the nearly 6 hour round trip to pick this box and side cabinet up and I am happy. I paid the guy $650. I think I may have been able to beat him up on the price there in person, but I felt that was pretty fair considering what these boxes go for around where I live here in Utah. Way nice guy. He and his buddy helped me load it which was critical as I just had hernia surgery lol.. I am now trying to figure out if I will be able to get Snap On to warranty any of these slides. I haven't called them yet and I also haven't dived into the cleaning and assessing stage. I'll know more after this weekend I reckon.. I do need to try and source the (or any) bracket that hangs the side box on the roll cab.. its not looking favorable as of now haha so if any of you have any leads, let me know.
Just for fun, if you want to, weigh in on whether or not you would do a full "restoration" on this or just fix the little things wrong with it and use it with a nice patina :) I'll give it a good cleaning and then post some really good pictures of it in the light tomorrow if I can.
Again, thanks to all that helped me out! I am excited to have such a well built tool box for the money!

Nice box for $650. I had to pay for the slides from Snap-on I replaced all of them it was well worth it IMO. They may ask for receipt or proof of original ownership if you try to warranty it.

I used to buy and sell toolboxes. What I see in the pictures would encourage me to offer $1000. If you find that you really want the box and contents, be prepared for a higher offer. I might top out at $1400, if $1250 does not work.
If I had a slightly detailed list of the included tools, I would offer more, if the tools dictated extra value. Do not think of a good cleanup as work. The ultrasonic can work wonders on dirty tools.
If you cannot find any joy in a good freshening up, maybe this is not for you.
Do not overbend the spring drawer stops when you are taking the drawers and slides out for cleaning. Diesel fuel is a good cleaning agent for this job. I have a power solvent tank, but not everyone has this. I also use my ultrasonic cleaning tank. This works magic on drawer sliders.
A dry spray lube is the best option for the slides. Avoid grease.

I think this toolbox has the potential to be worth twice that of what you suggest. I did not think SnapOn would warranty worn and dirty slides.

Happy ending. I thought $1000 was too much for friction drawers. If it were me, I’d look for a KRL for my tools and put parts, and electrical test type stuff in this one. I bought my KR761 (looks like a KRL 722) for $800. But there’s no extra space for consumables. Like to have another box that kinda matches my KRL but doesn’t need to be as nice.

tools inside the box looked pretty spotty to me, Pittsburgh wrenches, ughh.

Yeah, I did not spring for the tools. I did inquire about a couple of the air tools, but just ended up buying the box and side cabinet. I am way happy with it and I haven't even

Thanks for your reply! I, too, have bought and sold several tool boxes the past year or so. This is my first snap on of this size. I have bought and sold several smaller boxes but this is here to stay. I am happy to have paid $650 for this without tools. It will be a great box that I would be pleased to pass down to one of my sons one day. Ill post more as I dig into it. Thank you for the tip on diesel! I dont have an ultrasonic cleaner, so I will take your advice with the diesel :)

I forgot to mention, this box does have ball bearing slides! :) both were built in 1990. So thats good and bad I suppose. If I have to pay to replace the slides, I'm gonna be in deep.. but all of the drawers seem to slide great, just sticky and need to be cleaned. One drawer on the side cabinet has a detent missing but other than that, I believe a good deep clean and lubing will do wonders for this box. The models are KR-660B and KR-290 on the side cab. I gotta say.. I would have probably paid double if I could've snapped my fingers and magically added a deep, wide top drawer like your 722 has.... ugh thats the only thing I will miss about my old, big Husky box.. are the wide and deep drawers. But I am super excited to have a box that will hold more than 50 lbs in each drawer ;) Super excited about my heavy, 33 year old tanks
