Older Vent-A-Hood Fan Switch

I have an '80's Vent-A-Hood Range hood, with two exhaust fans, one runs CW the other CCW. There is a two speed switch to control the fan speed of both motors together. Trouble is the "Lo" speed is almost as high as the "Hi" speed. I like the "Hi" speed, for quickly clearing out cooking smells, but I want a real "Lo" speed. Any ideas what I can do? Is the switch faulty? I've seen rheostat kits for fireplace insert fans--would one of those work?

Did the switch work properly in the past and then start doing this, or has it never worked right?

I just got this vent-a-hood, but I think it's been doing this for years. I don't know if it came like this tho. It belonged to friends who had a housefire. I got it from them.

So for all you know this could be the way it always worked. Maybe it was meant to work this way and there isn't anything wrong with it.

Like I said, I want a real Lo speed on this exhaust hood. I don't care if it was designed that way... I want to slow it down on Lo speed. A rheostat would work if I can get one to carry the load of the fans.
