I have a Werner Attic ladder - I bought it from Lowes probably about 12-13 years ago. The model number is S2210 and is made mostly from steel
Recently I was cleaning up the drywall opening from the original install, so I removed the ladder and when it came time to reinstall it, I googled around for the manual. Unfortunately, I discovered a couple of class action lawsuits that are now settled.
The problem is with the hinges, They are made out of 'pot metal' and break pretty easily and several people have been injured. Additionally, the 'original' Werner Company went bankrupt in 2006 and the new owners (Wernerco) are not responsible for the ladders and do not have any parts available. I did speak with their customer service people and they offered to send me a $50 Home Depot gift card for my troubles which I thought was pretty nice of them.
In any case, you should take a look at your hinges if you have one of these attic ladders:
Model S2208 or S2210 steel attic ladder designated as Marks 1, 2, 3 or 4.
