I've got a pair with a 2-30 date stamp (February of 1930). I'll have to send in the form.

I have my grandfather's linesman's pliers from 3Q 1944. Man, those pliers are tough. He used them rigging equipment, my dad used them for years, and my brother and I grew up with them doing all the dumb stuff kids will do with tools. They're going strong and still in continuous use.

I seem to recall an identical contest Klein ran a long time ago -- twenty years or so possibly. Anyone else with grey hair remember that one?

I have a pair of these my Grandfather had. Problem is, the date codes are nothing like Klein describes in the above linked contest page. Near the bottom of the handle, on the inside surface on one handle there is a very clear, stamped into the metal, "O-4-37" while the other handle has a single "O" stamped in it.

The logo is as described except the text is all vertical, but wrapped around the circle, rather than the text being arranged radially around the circle. The beginning M and the ending S in M Klein & SonS are extra large.

The outside of the jaws are rounded like they describe as being the newer smoother "new england style head".

Klein may not be aware of all of the detail differences in their older products.

My grandfather did odd work and wired houses in NE Missouri when rural electric was coming into the area (after losing his job with the Walbash RR), and he moved to the west central part of MO about this time and became a postmaster, so these pliers didn't get used alot, and are in fairly good condition. (I recently visited my grandparents grave site, for the first time since my grandmother was buried in 1961. GF died about ten years earlier, before I was born)

Klein needs to up the ante, my would not be for sale for $2500 cash and $2500 tools if they were the oldest due to sentimental reasons. If I had found them at the flea market, that might be another story.

Charles

That's awesome! Any pictures?

Not currently but I'll take some and post. My pliers don't quite fit the rules either as there's isn't a logo anywhere, but the inside handle is marked

"M. KLEIN AND SONS" along with the 2-11 (February 1911) date code.

Perhaps a less durable logo was used in those days and it wore off.

Cutting edges are rather beat up but after 112 years, still a very strong pliers with a tight joint!!

Fixed! (But still VERY cool!)

Doesn't that beat all, I own at least six pairs and I bought all those fancy red handles that I had to boil them in hot water just to be able to get them inside the old handles; That stinks... The only way to be able to read a date is to cut off all those brand new plastic handles darn you Klein:(

Here's another pair of M. Klein & Sons. No date that I can find, but these look pristine.

1) 3-43
2) 3-56
3) 5-69
4) Marked OEIN so I am not sure if it's 8-45 or 4-56
5) 1-68 (Bell System)

I have a couple other pairs but they have grips on them.

0EIN would be April 1956. The first character, a zero, is just a placeholder I think, so when you have Oct, Nove, or Dec it is "M" for a 10, 11, or 12.

If you read the advertisment page you would know. March 31-2013

I got a pr going back to 1912 or 1918. I need to check. I have over 300 pliers in my collection. I am am not sure if they are here or on my farm in Indiana.

Those old pliers are fantastic.

If YOU read the page right you would know it ends MAY, 31 2013 :D

OK, I got mine out, only one pair of Kline lineman's I think I'm in 2nd currently for GJ. Number stamp 4-29, so April 1929; almost almost 84 years old...

So I have a pair that have O-L EK? 1942. Not old enough, but they are in VERY good condition. I also have a pair that are near mint from 1957, the year I was born.
The ones I used as an electrician were new in 1979 and they look 100 years old! I used them a lot.

Here's my 2-11 pair I mentioned previously.

The rules state it must have the Klein logo. The only markings are what you see on the handle.

Definition of logo: Recognizable and distinctive graphic design, stylized name, unique symbol, or other device for identifying an organization.

Does it qualify?

i don't think it qualifies as they are looking for the logo with the pole and lineman on it. it still wouldn't hurt to enter though there is an online form. what do you have to lose? a pair of pliers and a few minutes of your time?

Bryan, I'm not trying to discourage you or anything, but Klein was in existence about 60 years when those were made. But it's always worth a try to win. :)

BTW, I think Utica also used a similar date code system.
