Nothing new or earth-shaking about this old tip, but I just "re-remembered" it and it's working well for me, saving me money and space.

I've been running out of storage space for small hardware, drill bits, end mills, lock pins, etc. Instead of buying new drawers/bins/boxes and whatnot, with each drawer sparsely populated with just one size, I'm now doubling up, so many drawers/bins/boxes contain two very different sizes.

For example, my bin for 1/16 drill bits now also contains my 9/64 bits; my 5/64 bin also contains 5/32, and so on. For lock pins, my #2 pins are stored with #7 pins, #3 pins are stored with #8 pins, and so on. Since the sizes are so obviously different, there's no danger of mixing them up. Just make sure that when you combine sizes, they are different enough that you won't have any problem determining small from large size.

Label clearly, and voila, double the storage space.

Like I said, nothing profound, but it works. Anything to save a buck in this obonomy.

Or, you could just do like me and keep nearly thirty years of random, leftover hardware in a few boxes and coffee cans. It's very space-efficient. Only problem is that I never can find ****!

I do this for my dowel jointing centers, 1/4 w/ the 3/8, 5/16 w/ the 1/2. Hard to mix them up.

I already label/organize all my things like that. I was hoping for something a bit more magical :(
