After much inspiration from the likes of 4FN27, YaIdunno, ZMotorsports and many others here on GJ - and my excitement over yesterdays find - I decided I would start my own thread detailing tools acquired for my shop. I don't have a shop thread yet - or much of a shop for that matter. I currently work in an 11x40 workshop and have tools spread about between several outbuildings. I grew up in the shop (thanks Dad!) and there is still nowhere else I'd rather be. I love most all things vintage - cars, music, advertising (signs & neon), garage equipment AND last but not least - TOOLS!

I'll try to add pics of tools I've acquired over the last 40 years when I can. I think my "tool collection" started Christmas morning when I was 9 and had just started racing karts. A new tool box, socket set, screwdriver set and wrenches - still have the box and some of the tools.

Anyway, below is yesterday's addition to my future shop (will be installed in my dad's shop for now so we can use it (no functional space for me right now).

It's a Rockwell 28-3x5 20" bandsaw. Hi/Low with Variable speed pedal. 220 volt single phase and appears to be in nice working order. Includes the fence and optional dust blower. I'm dreading moving it on Sunday. From what I can find it's over 600 lbs.....

My dad and I were both very happy to find it. Future use for me and for him it will be great for a custom stainless exhaust system for his 32 that he's getting started on.

I look forward to adding more to this thread in the future and continuing to follow and learn from all the others here on GJ. I also plan to add a garage build thread soon (currently underway) and a vintage tool thread when time permits, and a shop build when that FINALLY happens.

Thx guys. Sorry for slow update. Saw is in place. Below is the means of moving. No action shots. It went much easier than I thought with a few good friends help. We just laid it on its spine on an oversize pallet and blocked it with lumber to keep from rolling. Pallet jack into the trailer, strap in place, and away we went. Reverse the process at my dad's shop and it was in place. If we didn't have to clear the overhead door into his shop I would have used my open trailer and left it upright.

Last few weeks have been busy, but my dad has been cleaning, wiring and put a new set of urethane “skins” on it as one of the old ones exploded right of the bat due to dry rot.

Yesterday I got to spend the day in the shop with my dad making final adjustments and getting it operational. We had to make a new cable for the speed adjustment assembly and do some tinkering.

Then we finally got to put it to the test. This is first piece of metal through the saw for us. Worked great! We love it! We still have to do some more adjusting to get the blade centered on the wheel and in the guides, but we can see it's a great addition to the shop.

Been a while since I’ve posted. Christmas season is a busy one for me at work. Did take a minute to snap a few pics of some of my other old tools in the shop. My dad spotted this old Craftsman block grinder in great shape on Craig’s for $60!! Got a box of vintage C clamps for another $40 to make an even Benji[emoji3]. The lathe is an old Atlas my dad picked up a long time ago and we haven’t yet used. The Grinder is another Craig’s find. I don’t know the brand if anyone does please let me know. I love the eye shields on it! Finally my Delta drill press. $200 at the local swap meet. It wasn’t fun loading but well worth it. I love the vintage tools and have been fortunate to make some good buys on solid old equipment. Can’t wait for the next find and to make some time to refurbish some of these pieces and put them to more use.

I have never seen a cable set-up like yours before, how does it work running over the pulleys ? could you not have used a belt for it? If you had to use an all metal cable could you not have found one with say chain links type set up?

.

Woody, the cable set up is factory to the earlier Rockwell saws. It was later replaced by a sprocket and roller chain. I will likely upgrade this when time permits to eliminate any slop.

Ron I am digging the Lathe...

Put that stuff to use!!!

Thanks Pat! Hope you had a Merry Christmas. I've got quite a bit to learn as I've never used a lathe. Looking forward to it. The atlas is missing the main feed screw and related hardware. I also have an old Logan lathe with the original "swan shaped" cast iron legs and full drip tray. I'll be mounting whichever lathe I keep on this base......
