Alright guys. Our Volvo s80has been nothing but problems. After the alternator and fuse problem, another problem arises. So Saturday Night we go to walmart. Go to start the car and click. Computer says start prevented. Finally got it running on 5th try and got home. Today, same thing happens. It was in park with foot on the brake. Finally got it on the 3rd try. My mom is so nervous with this car now. What could this be? Is there a way to override the computer? Sorry about all the questions but I don't have the answer to this one. Please help!!

Sometimes the brake pedal sensor goes bad and this does not allow the car to be started or the car to be shifted out of park. Have you been on any of the Volvo forums to inquire? Likely this is not an isolated incident in that model.

Agreed, those would be my first two suspects.

My advice: This issue needs a professional diagnose machine. Don't guess and risk fixing something that works. Shops make far too much money fixing amateur mistakes. Don't make another.

Usually that's a problem with the communication between the chip in the key and the antenna ring that's mounted around the ignition switch. Make sure you have no other chip keys, bluetooth thingies or anything else that transmits RF close to the ignition switch. If it happens with more than 1 key, it's the antenna ring. If it happens with only 1 key, then it's that key.

I agree with MikeF2316. I used to wrench on those money makers all the time (the S80). The antenna rings were one of the top parts replaced when dealing with immobilized systems on those cars. It's a simple 5 minute job. Good luck!

If you will be keeping this car for a while, I highly recommend getting VIDA DICE which is the Volvo Software. It will be very helpful in figuring out problems like this.
