Swapped out the brass valve seat doodads & the washers on a couple of faucets. Removed the old & installed the new by using a flat screwdriver pushed into the valve seat... Thought to myself "Yanno, there's probably some spiffy tool for this..."

& it turns out there is:

Lowes has a pretty much identical set for $35.88 :(

BUT!! Now I know what they look like I shall keep an eye out at yard/estate sales :)

I've got an older set, L shaped, different sizes/shapes on each end.

This house is about 30 years old & nothing has even been upgraded. My old place was twice as old & had ceramic spiffiness in the faucet dept.

I've been in the US for 25 years & still have the occasional "oh, so that's how they do it out here in the colonies" moment.

A/C service guys use a tool similar to that that has a stubby hex/torx (?) for opening and closing service valves.

I have an "ancient" Craftsman 1/2" X 9/16" ratcheting double box end that looks almost identical.

Plumbers tool definitely fall into the "using the right tool...."

Go to some pawn shops and look in tool boxes or assorted tool bins. Great place to find sets.

Plumbers seem to have a lot of specialty tools.

I've started buying them too and throwing in a "plumbing toolbox"

I remember the day I learned about the basin wrench. It did two things, it made faucet installation much easier, and it gave me one more reason to be come an electrician instead of a plumber. ;)

I have an old square Nicholson file that has a square, tapered tang. I've used it for years to remove and install seats. Works great.

House was built in 1910 or 1901, depending on what paper work you read, and power and water added in the 30's ... bought a seat tool when I bought the house.

If you let the old faucets drip, it'll erode the seat and tear the rubber seal making it drip more ... until it's a continuos flow. don't take long either ...
