On a Budget

Hi All,
just wanted to show my unfinished project,
I'm Cheap and Proud of saving more then I spend so here goes, hehehehe
The bottom cabinets I found for free, from a guy at work remodeling his kitchen,
the top cabs I got from a girl for 40 bucks, Painted the walls cabinets and found a mom and pop store going out of buisness and they gave me all the peg board I could ever need, So with that being said not alot of money has gone into it. I should be done in a few weeks. Have to paint the peg board black and put the counter top on the cabinets... Not a show at all, It willl be neat clean and functional. Thats the goal for this first time home owner

I just registered for this site (5 minutes ago). I have been looking at some of the garages that others have posted and have to say...you are more on my level. I also enjoy saving more than I spend...and when it comes down to it..its a garage..not a showroom.

Goat: There are many folks here who have modest working garages, that is what I have. All of my wall cabinets, work benches etc.. have come as cast offs, or dumpster dives! Welcome aboard.

Shop or Showroom/Save or Spend

Lets try this again ,,,as i mentioned above,, one can have a garage looking like a showroom if one wants it to look that way,, As far as spending or saving goes,, everything in my garages are paid in full, and im still saving my money,,, so dont be judgmental on those of us who dont want dirty,greasy old rags lyin' around,,, and you sure dont know my bank account!! rj

Easy guys, we are all different and have differing senses of what a great garage is.

One thing I've learned is that no matter how good you think you are, or your stuff is, someone else can beat it. And while I have a really nice garage now (IMO), I went through some others in the early days that weren't so nice, or so expensive. That earlier experience makes me enjoy what I do have right now even more, really.

One thing I haven't seen talked about much is that it is clear that there are some people who want a showroom and apparently never really work on the cars very seriously (like the recent Ford GT/Viper garage) and so seem to go for the showroom look, and others who (more like me) are striving for a functional but attractive look in their space. Others are proud of the fact that they accomplished so much with so little- and there is a place for that (remember the Index of Performance award at LeMans for the cars with very small engines that could never really win overall? Same idea.)

I guess my overall point is that there is room for everyone, as long as they are working to have a better garage.

As to the garage at the top of the thread, I like the idea of trying to match the paint color scheme.

That's my theory, anyway!

I'm proud of my cheapness!

During the build of my garage/shop i bought the following, used but 100% working:

$1,200 beadbast cabinet w/vac for $120

$1,800 Di-arco 36" shear for $250

$900 Di-arco 36" brake for free!!! came with shear.

$500 welding table for $150

$1,400 plasma cutter for $600

and since this thread is about cabinets, I got about $5,000 worth of "executive lunchroom" cabinets, three stainless sinks, three undersink heater and all the tops for a qwhopping $1,000.

And that's not all. I'm averaging about $0.30 on every dollar I spend for the other tools/equipment. Craigslist and recycler (local print ads) are my friends!


It's YOUR garage, not somebody elses! If it is what makes you happy and proud, then you've got it right.

BTW, I loke the two color cabinets. That's exactly what I want to do (white frames, grey or red or black doors). Even some racing stripes on the doors!

I too have gone through many not so extravagant garages, However my new garage that i will be in very shortly will most likely be my last garage for a very long time and it will be done right!!!

What a great SHOP! You my friend have a SHOP! I on the other hand have a garage HEHE.
Answer to your question ( YES I'm a Ford man ) Currently I just have my two daily drivers, 05 Explorer, and an old Ranger that I tool around with while doing yard work. The goal is to make my garage a clean neat inviorment not a show room but one day I will be able to move up as time goes on.

I have had the good fortune to sort of work my way up the garage ladder, but i still REALLY enjoy seeing what some body does with smart money. I can't speak for anybody else, but I got most of what I have by pinching pennies pretty hard. (Wire was invented when another cheapskate tried to take a penny out of my hand...) So I like to see how creative you guys can can be with your garages and shops. Lets see more good ideas to reuse and recycle, find the killer deals, and share the do it your self knowledge so we can get the most whether we have pennies or dollars to spend!

Kdawg, Your my kinda guy. I love to take something that someone finds useless and "recycle" it . Built my garden building 12x12 from leftover construction materials I pick up over time. All I had to buy were the shingles and siding. It's truly amazing what gets tossed in this country daily.
I also wait for sales on new purchases or look for the used highend pieces.I hit the pawn shops too and have picked up some fantistic deals. I've also contrubited to them a couple of times, had a right angle drill and sawsall stolen from my truck.
Someone told me once " money is a tool" and I like to get the most out of my tools

Nice job Kdawg, can't wait to see more pictures. By the way, who would give a RAT'S A$$ about anyones bank account on this site. We're all proud of our garages no matter how much we spend. Make your garage to suit yourself and have fun in it. I don't have the type you can eat off the floor but I like it and enjoy seeing pictures of "show room" type garages. Be proud of what you can do and send more pictures.

I couldn't agree w/ sjsfire more. While there are some VERY seriously well funded garages on this site the majority of us ( I like to think) are "average Joe" kind of people. However, we ALL learn from EVERYONE. Those with XXK to spend on a garage would appreciate the good idea just as much as those of us w/ less than XK to spend. The great commonality is NOT how much money you have, instead, it's "How did you use your space!".

Obviously $$ reigns supreme but if done right a budget build up can be JUST AS beneficial as an open wallet. (Regardless I bet we ALL appreciate a good find/good deal/spending less $$ than necessary!)

Hello All

Although my weekend was full I was able to do a few things,
I need to finish painting the cabs and hanging the peg board, But overall it's coming along for a simple attached garage....

thanks for all your reply's, I totally agree who cares about anothers bank account LOL thats too funny. Can never judge a book by the cover, and that goes for bank account as well... A great book, " The millionare next door" and Your Money Matters are two great books HAHA. Any who does anyone know were I could find cool banners or Signs, Quaker state banner product banner kinda like you see at Auto Zone Or checkers.. Just wondering,

i would go to the AutoZone and asked if they have any extra banners or the name of their salesman/rep for the products that have banners or signs.
some companies just love to give away banners and such.

Welcome thats the spirit of garage craftsmenship I admire. There is absulutely nothing wrong with used/refurbished. I think it shows a little more pride in workmanship than picking up the Griots Garage Catalog and ordering every carbon fiber/diamond deck doo-hickey your checkbook allows.
