been looking at a new home and it only has a 1 1/2 bay garage and no room to build onto it. It also an attached garage,i have had 2 different homesboth with garages so far in life and they have both been detached and it has worked out great. my big concern with an attached is will all the smells go straight into the house? if so is there a way to seal it so that doesnt happen? I will be using it to work on older motorcycles doing carb cleans (old gas smell) a little airbrush work, some spray paint stuff and even exhaust smell now and then.I also have a mig and tig welder that I assume I will not be able to use due to the fumes??or am I wrong is their a way I can keep using all my tools in this garage??please help garage journal:sad:
thanks
Rick.

no other options, maybe wait and get the house you want. no sense going in with reservations of you can avoid it.

That is what I would do. This is your biggest investment of most peoples life.
So find a house that is what you want and need. there are plenty of houses for sale now and great interest rates and homes will never be lower priced than now.

I am a young man of meager means. To make things worse I highly value my wife's happiness and want to give her the world. Darn the bad luck :). My wife fell in love with a house that has an attached 1 1/2 car garage. I enjoy metal fab, auto repair and the occasional wood working. The small size limits my storage space for tools and materials. I plan to build a 10x20 shed in the backyard to help with this. The fumes do go right in the house, it is terrible. I had to drop the gas tank in a Jeep the other night and it stunk the whole house up because I spilled some on the garage floor in process of removal.

I am stuck. Are you? If at all possible, pass on this one and keep looking. If the wife has to have the house, then make due like I do. Just know it is every bit of the hassle you can imagine plus some. Make sure the wife understands this too. When I grind on something in the garage, the wife can hear it clear as day in the living room. Fumes travel, better ventilation would probably help.

Either **** it up or don't. It goes both ways, in that my wife wants me to be happy too.

All garage doors going directly into the living space should have full weatherstripping to seal out fumes. This is the code. You should also have some ventilation in the garage for your own health. Keep some spill clean up around. Use a air freshener if you have to.

The only garage smell that gets into the house is you. That's why you should leave your footwear and outer clothing in the garage when done with a dirty job.

the thing is the house itsself is amazing its all I have ever wanted in a houes, it just falls short in the garage dept. It is at a lake that is close to my work as well as the wifes and their will be all kinds of kids my sons age for him to play with (current house has not 1 kid for him to play with) so by saying no to this house I guess im feeling selfish?? I want my family to be as happy as they can be, but I guess I an keep an yey out for the next house at the lake??I just dont want to wait to long my son is already 12 yrs old..

I thought about the smells going into the house but never thought about the sounds..I would love to come up with an idea on how to work this out...I will let you all know how it goes..thanks for all the info fellas and please if anyone else has any ideas on how to make it work just chime in...thanks!

You could most of the stuff you do in an out building. In a way you are lucky, you work on small stuff that doesn't require a giant space.
