Finally heading out to the shop tomorrow to look at the stain samples for the doors. The weather has been cr*p here the last few weeks and delayed things. Fingers crossed the doors can be up in April. Sigh...

Finally!

Well, it looks like the install will finally begin tomorrow morning. Last week saw record rain fall here - absolutely ridiculous. The weekend was beautiful. Spent Friday and Saturday emptying out my dad's garage attic. A literal sh*t ton of random stuff. Everything from full acetylene torch gear in perfect order to a box of PVC cut-off scraps to used air filters for cars long gone (some strangers' cars he worked on) to Coleman camping gear we used in the early sixties up in Yosemite that has since been shipped around the world several times. Bittersweet carrying stuff to the curb I have such fond memories of. God bless you, dad.

Spent today taking down the remnants of the tent that had been beat to death by the crazy winds, rains, and storms that settled here in December and never left. Salvaged what I could and packed it up. Wrapped the engine and moved the hoist up the stairs to the side. Broomed it all and the outside is ready.

Then, spent a the rest of the day making room in the garage and foyer which had begun to fill up with parts for my latest toy, a 2002 Boxster S that I am prepping for some track time - or at least I would be if I HAD ACCESS TO MY GARAGE during the winter. Inside is ready to go - foyer is clear and the front half of the garage is empty.

They sent some pictures of the doors about halfway through the prep work in the shop with the Spar Varnish being applied so at least here is a teaser!

Almost!

Thanks, Gerard. The guys were no shows on Monday. They came Tuesday/Wednesday and almost finished the carriage doors. They are coming back tomorrow to finish up and do the entry door. Almost there. Here are a few pictures until I can get some real photos.

These are big, heavy doors.

Those doors are magnificent, did they use spar varnish on them? For tips on maintaining them get the book The Hinckley Guide to Yacht Care, those guys really know varnishing tips and techniques that are useful for us OCD types.

1/2 Cup: Thanks, man! I think even if I had skipped these doors and used a few plastic garbage bags taped together to cover the opening I still wouldn't have been as productive as you have been over the last few months. You sir are a machine!

jsherid1: Yes, the put two coats of McCloskey's Man O' War Marine Spar Varnish down with a brush for penetration and then spray another three coats for a satin finish. Thanks for the reference. I know I now have a regular maintenance cycle to support to keep the doors healthy and beautiful.

Entry door install is underway. Pretty smooth so far. Pictures later!

Done! At least for now!

Front Entry Door Finished! I will be removing the medallions from the trim before refinishing the outside trim to better match the clean lines of the door.

View of both with the carriage doors open. Now it makes the shutters look shabby... next house project! Ack!

Garage was temporarily stuffed during the install. Automatic openers work!

Lots of light through both the carriage doors and the entry door. The color is a nice reddish deep (but not dark) hue that doesn't show up consistently in the pictures due to color balance, I guess.

I've still got some finishing work to do. Threshold under carriage doors and also a cement ramp to the tile edge about 6" inside the doors although maybe I'll take the tiles out another 6" and have the doors rest against a weather strip on the end of the tiles - still deciding. I also need to work out the protective flashing above the top of the carriage door trim. Otherwise I a so relieved and happy!

Thanks, guys!

The Japanese Maple and its small retaining wall will be moved so that the carriage door that can't open all the way right now will. There is still 16" of clearance so I can get my car in but it would be nice to pick up the extra foot! :)

Those doors are hot! No wonder you decided to go that route with the doors. They really look great and help to continue the look of the front fascia of your place.

Thanks, dubber! It is so nice to finally be able to leave a car in the garage and work partially done. I stayed home today and rebuilt the back brakes on the Boxster. It started raining, I closed the doors. Rather than have to leave everything out in the rain like before the project it is already put away. I used to have to stop work, reassemble the car, move it out, and the repack everything back in. I decided to wait until tomorrow to do the fronts (the wheels are stuck on so I moved to the rears) and simply shut off the light and went upstairs. I am so relieved and happy! :) Life is good.

Finishing the rebuild of all four corners of the Boxster's brakes, including the e-brakes and unwelding the stuck front wheels.

Before - notice the white spots where the wheels had welded themselves to the hub. I'd like to thank the previous owner for not using anti-seize !

After - Ready for Tech Inspection for the DE

I put away the tools and now its time to have a Dark and Stormy! Happy Friday!

Man, that looks awesome! I posted a thread on dorki about garages and spaceships and huts, in northern Virginia. LOL. If I do buy something that has a garage, your reno will be a great read through for sure! I will definitely consider the carriage doors. We are looking at something in Arlington tomorrow and the carriage doors might just make it tall enough for a 4 post!

WOW! This is an amazing transformation! I love the doors; they are beautiful! Thanks to your thread, I decided to download the Sweet Home 3D program to assist me in my design and vision. I'll probably continue to play around a bit but I've pretty much completed my concept and am quite pleased with it.

Once I've finished the garage, I'm looking to unload the 'Vette and get a Porsche, too. I'm getting pretty excited about the possibilities this new workspace will allow.

Thanks for all of the inspiration your page has provided and keep the updates coming!

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I've been busy all summer rebuilding the Boxster for the track. So far I have completely redone all of the suspension components, wheels, tires, seats, harnesses, a few engine tweaks, and actually managed to get it out on the track! The garage has been a joy although I still wish it was two feet longer and two feet wider. Or, twenty feet longer and forty feet wider. :)
