One day a Mustang...

I had a 1966 Mustang for about ten years, which I sold a few years ago. Long story short, I regret selling it, and now I have a bigger garage, and one day, I'll have another Mustang in it.

But first, I'm going to build the shop to house it in.

The garage is a three car, tandem set up. When we moved in a year ago, it became the catch-all for everything without a place.

The cabinets were salvaged from my Dad's kitchen remodel (he moved into a condo a couple years ago, hence the old lady style shelf liner). I sanded them down, took the strawberry field shelf liners out, and restained an painted parts of the cabinets.

Looks like a good start -- I had a chance to buy a '66 Mustang in decent shape for $3200 bucks many years ago....seemed like all the money in the world then, but I'd sure love to have it now!

The cabinets look good...what did you do to center sections? Paint?

Looks like a cool old fridge....any plans for it?

I painted the panels with Rustoleum's hammered metal spray. I was originally going to use red, but nobody in the box stores sell it. In hindsight, I like the look of the silver more.

The fridge is a 50's Gibson, that my grandma had for years. When she died in 1998, my dad brought it back to his house, and then when he moved, I got to bring it home. It keeps beer frosty cold...

Love the cabinet makeover, i have been thinking of going with kitchen cabinets but not sure how i could make them more garage orientated without going with black, i really love the dark stain with the silver/gray inserts. The fridge is awesome i have an old apartment style that i want to paint flat black with flames(only cause i cant afford to chrome a refrigerator)

First off, Welcome to GJ. This place will set you up or drive you nuts as far as what you want to do to the garage. Most likely the latter.

The cabinets look good. I like the silver Hammertone in the middle. If you are looking at painting around the outer edges to cover the stained wood look, you might try a black Hammertone.

Looking forward to more progress pics. Just don't drive yourself nuts after seeing all the ideas on the site.

Originally I was going to paint the cabinets all one color. If I had found the red hammertone, my goal was to make them have the kind of texture of old toolboxes. Or if I had found the light blue hammertone, they would have had a similar texture to the old tackle boxes which are on the top of the cabinets in a couple of pictures.

But, the only colors stocked by Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace were all silver, copper, antique brass, and black.

I like the look of the metal cabinets that I've seen on a lot of the posts, but ultimately I thought if I painted the stained parts, they'd just look like wood that was painted with a metallic paint. The center panels were pretty much flat, so the thought behind it was that I would paint them with the metallic, and they'd kind of look like they were just metal inserts. On a couple of them the woodgrain is slightly visible, but from a few feet away, they look alright.

Here's a pic of the Fridge. I've seen some that were painted, one was a black with silver ghost flames that was sweet, but I don't have plans to do anything with it other than to hold my beer and gatorade...

It is the original paint. Its in really good shape but at some point I'll need to replace the door seal, its not very flexible anymore.

With the garage, I want to make sure its completely organized so that when I do find that project car, I won't have to climb over stuff, or search for tools for an hour.

Also when the garage looks clean, the missus is happier...

Its been a month since I last posted, but I have been working slowly but surely to get the garage done. With summer upon us, yardwork is taking up more time now.

I built the workbench earlier this week though, so now I can get some other projects done.

Its just a basic bench using the one remaining lower cabinet from the kitchen remodel. I placed the cabinet drawers on the right so they won't be blocked when I add a second workbench in an "L" shape.

I wanted to get a steel bench top, but they're a bit more spendy than I want at this point. I picked up a forklift damaged solid core door from Lowes, and cut it down to a 25" depth. I don't know how durable it will be in the long run, but it was only $26. I painted the edge with the same rustoleum paint as the other cabinets.

I'll probably put some sort of shelf on the lower part of the bench, but I haven't decided if I want one there yet. My hesitation being that I want some room to stretch my legs when seated at the bench.

I'm in the Denver Metro Area. I keep checking Craigslist Denver for Mustangs between 64 1/2 and 73. I'm not ready to buy yet, but I like looking. Its kind of like the Garage Journal. This place is my new guilty pleasure and I kill so much time here just looking at everyone elses projects.

Thanks! I hope that when everything is done, I'll have a place to store and display all of the vintage and other random stuff that I have accumulated which clash with my wife's interior decor. The garage kind of works as that space.

If I do it right, it'll be functional and look good too.

I have the old kerosene lanterns on top of the cabinets and I'm trying to figure out a way to light them with LEDs for effect.

It has been a while since my last post, but I have made progress. Two years ago, I had only finished the tandem bay in my garage, while the main section remained half-finished. I added insulation, did the drywall, and painted. Then recently, I re-painted the back wall of the tandem bay because, why not?
