Thanks Brunow! Only a few, the yard is still unfinished. But now when the garage no longer requires driving around with excavators or backhoes, next project for this summer is some lawn and a sandbox for my daughter.. :)

The terrace is already been built twice, i hated the first version every time i went out.. and one day i just had enough of it:

And the new, better one:

Joni: it looks like you built the welding table i'm going to build except you put on wood instead of steel. very nice and can you tell me is the black material on the wood a formica type product? it looks very sharp and functional.

tell me was it hard to weld and build and please add your pictures on my welding table build thread if you have any more. i love the casters you picked too.

funny i'm getting ready to redo our deck this summer along with a fence project and your deck is amazing. what size wood are you using for decking and what kind? i'm sure the stain you are using is better than anything we can get in US, but just for kicks what brand and type is yours?

have a great day at work or in the shop and always like the pictures and write ups of your progress. BTW (By The Way) if you can get that much accomplished with just those few tools imagine what you can do with a full wall of tools.

cheers

Very nice !

I don't know if it has made the news in your country, but the Northeastern part of the US, especially near Boston, has received MASSIVE amounts of snow in the past few weeks. Several time more snow in the month of February than what they get in a typical winter ! This is a big problem for a big city with narrow streets. No place to put the snow !

Thanks arz71!

The contrast might be a little dark on the picture, it's just normal brown film faced plywood, or so google tells me it's called in english. :)

Nothing special with the welding, i tried to get all the squarer tubings in same lenghts with an old and heavy angle grinder.. welding magnets at the corners, some vices for extra help, tacked welds and before melting it solid, a quick look with the right angle tool.

Edit: and clean the areas before welding parts together with a flap disc.

It's close enough 90* at the corners, maybe a half centimeter off on the opposite corners. Didn't bother to cool the welds down, maybe it warped a little, but makes no difference in the end. It's just a table, i'm not going to the moon with it.. :)

I'll post some pictures in your welding table thread, thanks!

The deck is pine, 120mm x 28mm (4.8" x 1.12" ? ) coated with a layer of Tikkurila wood oil, and the fence is made of spruce, 22mm x 50mm (0.88" x 2").

I haven't seen the news in a couple of days, been busy with work, family and the garage, i have the radio on most of the day, but i think i didn't hear about that. It's been a easy winter here, not much snow and i'm happy with that. The joys of living in the city without a parking space, been there done that.. February is usually the coldest month here, sometimes up to -30*c, luckily not that often though.. now we've had temperatures around -6*c to +5*c for weeks.. and i hope it continues that way.

The first picture is taken in december 2014 and the second one a year earlier.

Thanks sean Buick 76!

Yesterday i got the last pieces of sheetrock in place in the storage room and screw holes filled up. Thought that i'll have a chance to sand the walls and get the first layer of paint on. Yeah..

Been babysitting this day, so it's been mostly just going through ideas for the garage. One was the placement of garage stereos, i listen a lot of music and i have speakers even in the sauna.. :)

One possibility is to go with small satellites and a subwoofer, like Denwood has done in his awesome garage. But i doubt that, sometimes bigger is better.

The left cabinet will house the amplifier and i was thinking that i'll cut the cabinet floor open and build a separate enclosure for a 12" sub, so that the sub element is facing towards the floor. Takes no extra space and it's a little bit protected inside the cabinet.

I think i'll go with the 12" Peerless SLS 12, the price/quality-ratio is very good, it costs about 100 euros, 112 USD.

http://www.powerset.fi/pdf/peerless-830669.pdf

and feed it with this separate amplifier i ordered already today, the t.amp 400:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tamp_e400.htm

For the main speakers i have a old Yamaha amp, but i might upgrade it for a used, newer model, with internet radio.

Joni, your shop is looking great. We are just getting to -5C during the day..last month average was around -20C :-(. Your shop build pictures very much remind me of what I see when I look outside.

Up until my garage build I only had a small radio in the shop. Now my problem will be neighbors in the summer when many have their windows open. Bigger is always better with speakers :) My sauna has no sound...hmm :)

Thanks Denwood, that's nice to hear. :) The weather was great for a walk round the village today with my family, those things are more important than any builds. To see the smile on my daughters face... That is just fantastic. :)

Sorry, this is not garage related stuff, feel free to skip this part.

I got some weird looks at work when i told i was going to put speakers in the sauna.

"-You must be kidding, that's a place to relax, not to play music!" said one. "That's blasphemy!" shouted another one.

Whatever, it's my sauna. I have a pair of outdoor-use speakers mounted below the benches and the signal comes from a SONY micro-unit that is on the other side in the kitchen corner. Speaker cables are taped inside the aluminium paper under the panels and go through the stone wall that separates the kitchen from the sauna.

The terrace has it own speakers too, you can see them a little bit in the build pictures, mounted over the windows. Living room is powered by a Yamaha RX-A810. Multi-room takes care of those, you can watch tv, see movies or listen to radio in the living room and have a different source playing in the terrace area with a separate volume control. And i can use my android phone or tablet to control the amplifier trough my home network.

I sail with a guy you would get along with very well Joni. His home theater took a year to build...and his entire house is set up for "every room" audio. The Sauna is a place to relax first and foremost for us. If music helps, I say bring it on! It's good to know that the outdoor speakers work in that environment...I would guess that not many folks have speakers in their sauna.

The basement sauna/bathroom area is all designed into a 6'x12' space. It is easily the most efficient space in our house. Took me a few months playing with design to figure out the space.

This thread is a great reminder that continents, languages and cultures apart, we're pretty much all the same :)

Today's achievement: got the ceiling + walls sanded and painted in the storage room, finished ceiling moldings on the garage side. A full 8 hours day, but now it's done. I think i'll have a cup of coffee next.. :)

Had to paint one wall full gray with the red stripe, ran out of white paint and didn't want to buy more. My calculations for the needed amount seems to be pretty right.

Storage room will get some paint on the floor most likely on wednesday, and after that i finally can get some shelving done there.

Nothing special in the picture, just took it so you can see that the color theme continues there.. :)

Edit: The 16 amp wall socket in the picture will power the compressor, i need to get some hardware for the airlines. The workbench will get a couple sockets on both ends and a wall mounted air hose reel is on the to buy-list.

Bib, first page mentions some in-floor electric, and a heat pump.

Joni, how are the hydraulic jack/wheels on your work table working for you? I need to build a small folding bench and want it solid, but portable.

Thanks Bib Overalls.

Like Denwood said, cable in worbench area if i want to work barefoot ;) , heat pump and some electric radiators.

The table works perfect, had to move it a couple of times yesterday, and when lifted up i think my daughter could move that thing around.

Joni,
nice improvements to the garage as usual. i agree if you want sound in your sauna and can figure out how to do so and make it work then do it. also if there are days to just think without tunes just don't turn them on. all this talk of a sauna does deserve a picture or two or three. also maybe let us know how you keep the sound system's speakers from getting damaged from the heat and moisture.

keep up the great work and if you can post a few more pictures of the finished bench on my welding table thread that would be great. also thanks for posting the ones you did with all the tips. my welder has been working overtime the past few weeks, but he thinks we can start welding up the first of 3 tables this weekend.

cheers

Thanks Sunbimmer, i'll have to try and take some better pictures with my dslr. The phone is always in my pocket, so most of the pics are taken with it..

1/2 Cup Come on, it's nothing special, there's plenty of better and nicer builds here. :) But thanks!

Hi Drivesitfar, i'll have to get back to you on that sauna speaker-setup. I have to clean there first.. :)

Edit: here's one, today is cleaning day..

The speakers are designed for outdoor-use, and the temperature is not that high under the sauna bench.

Got a little bit done in the garage, storage room floor and workbench area is painted. Also painted a bit under the high cabinets so i can get them mounted in place and start to move the stereo and some cleaning equipment. Installed some cable cover to hide the speaker wiring, and it works as batten (?) at the same time. And next, some high-quality pics..

Terve Erkka, kiitokset!

Small update, got my T.amp from Germany yesterday, so today i worked a little bit with the garage sounds. Damn thing weighs almost 10 kg..

The amp should push bridged 380W @ 8Ω, i added some ventilation holes, just in case.. :

Everything in place, wires tucked and a separate 3.5mm jack for mp3 player:

And a cover to keep most of the dust away:

And again, some quality mobile phone pictures, enjoy! :)

More plywood..

I'm leaving a little gap between the floor and plywood for some silicone sealant.

Joni: nice work per usual. i'm guessing you will be able to hear your music while working in the yard if you turn it up a bit and have the garage doors open this summer? or will the neighbors a half mile from you be able to hear it too?

i have a question about your plywood you use. is the black finish that it has a formica type finish or painted? also how much is a 4 x 8 foot piece either in 1/2 or 3/4 inch thick in Finland?

do you still have a foot or so of snow on the ground or is it warming up?

Moro, nice looking garage! And I really like the workbench. What's the floor going to be, just painted or epoxy, sika floor??

BTW, is the black container collecting rain water from the corner of the terrace?

Keep up the good work, nice to see many pics, phone is just fine :)

Drivesitfar, i promise, i won´t disturb the neighbours. Well, not too much at least.. :) Just kidding, we have about 500m to the nearest house you can see, but i try to consider others.

This looks like the same plywood i use, film face. Had to google a little bit on that formica finish. 9mm thick film face plywood sawed to 12 pieces in 100mm x 2800mm cost me 30e (~32 USD), not bad.

http://www.plyco.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_76&products_id=193

A 4 x 8 foot piece in 3/4, same that i have on the walls, was about 16 USD, if i remember correct. The pieces had some minor scratches here and there, sold as second quality (?). That's cheap, i have a good, small store near me that sells all kinds of iron and plywood, i buy all that stuff from them. The same size piece costs almost 42 USD at the hardware store.

Weather has been very nice, up to +8 C (46 F ), we do still have a little bit snow left but most of it is gone.

Hi Matias, thanks! The floor will get two coats of Betolux akva, just to control the dust, i think i would damage the epoxy with sparks from welding. Paint is cheaper and easy to fix. Yes, the container is for rain water. In the future when we get some gardening done, we can use it for watering.

Bought a 12" JBL CS-1214 sub today, had a little time before work, so i started to build a sealed enclosure for it.

I really need to buy a table saw, makes things so much easier..

Joni: i'll be 60 next year and I've managed to do several projects without a table saw. A miter saw, skill saw, chain saw, and router can do a lot of jobs without putting a table saw in the middle of your shop. i do own a small table saw now and it's almost too nice to use, but i'll be cutting boards to make this fence this summer.

I built this cedar Pergola in my front yard a couple summers ago without a table saw and only using the tools i mentioned.

your shop is coming along nicely and hopefully your little girl will like working out there with you as much as Denwood's girls do in his garage/shop.

keep up the great work in your new shop and I always like seeing your progress and ideas to make it better. BTW (by the way) your plywood costs are pretty reasonable.

cheers

Hi Drivesitfar! Age is just numbers, and i mean that in a good way.. :) Very nice work on the yard!

I thought i could probably live without a table saw, but once i got to use one building the garage, there´s no turning back. Something in size of a Metabo that i got to use, it´s enough for me.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/metabo-315mm-tkhs315m-site-table-saw-240v

Couple of months ago someone was selling a slightly used Makita 2705 for almost half-price.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0027FFKWY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Thought about it for too long and missed my chance on that, it was sold in a few hours.

Got the floor moldings finished, i had a enough to go round the whole garage, so installed it behind the workbench too. Ended up replacing the screws on parts i put on place earlier. I know, no one would notice it, but it bothered me.. And added silicone sealant between the floor and moldings to keep water out.

Today finished the sub-box build, threw some felt on it that i had laying around from previous projects. Only the front of the box will be visible so i didn't spend too much time upholstering.. Still need to make a couple of shelves more in there, for a laptop to stream music, etc.

Still plenty of room to fill up with things i don´t need.

I´m very pleased how the sound is now, it really beefs up the bottom. Had to change the polarity for the sub, now the only spot where it kind of fades out, a flat spot, is right in front of the storage room door. No rattling from the cabinet, yet.

Joni: i don't know if you have a Craigslist or some sort of garage sales, but over here table saws come up fairly often so be a little patient and your money will buy a lot more saw with extras than buying a new one. if you were closer I'd loan you one of my other 2 table saws or sell you one cheap (less than $100).

I think it was 65 here yesterday so our weather is really been nice. it did rain 2 inches on Sunday, but i was able to mow the lawn with my push mower that next day. the guys in the lower areas weren't as lucky.

keep posting your updates and always good to see what you are doing.

Small progress again, been a little busy with the family and work, trying to collect some money to keep things going forward.

Got the bigger shelf frames from the sandblaster, and bought a pile of smaller shelving parts. Trying to figure out a good layout on those, damn window and electric radiator is making it a bit of a PITA.. Should have taken the storage room window out from the drawings, but it´s too late now.

Well, anyway, here´s something i thought would work..

Parts sandblasted and painted

Brackets to hold the top in place

Left a good space for the compressor under the shelves. Probably going to weld shelving brackets from square tubing on those bigger standards, to store heavier things on..

Part of the shelving done, 40 cm x 240 cm in lenght, should have now plenty of room for a bunch of stuff..

A second trip to the old garage, i think i'll need to make more shelves..

Joni: shelving looks great and you can never have too much of it if you want to not have to go to the hardware store for every project.

nice trailer too.

just curious and maybe you said, but are you putting a cabinet in the unfinished hole in the wall or is a window going in there when the weather warms up a bit?

keep up the great work and pictures and i know there are more members and non members enjoying your project than just me because look how many views you have since you started.

Hi Drivesitfar, thanks for the comments! :)

I've been looking through for sale-ads on the web for a used window to fill that hole, but no luck so far. I think i'll just buy a new one for 200e. I found the big windows used, paid 250e for all 5. Triple glazed with aluminium frame on the outer side, not a bad price..

Just got the last parts, paints and treasures hauled from the old garage, the pickup stays there untill i get the floor painted.

Edit: Got my wifi working in the garage. I bought a Asus wireless-n router and threw a separate antenna outside the window sill. Youtube works great inside the garage without problems..

It's not that long way from Lahti to Grand Junction, small world.. :)

Crazy isn't it! We are a blended family. Her two kids from her prior marriage speak Finnish at home, and our 2.5 year old pretty well speaks only Finnish. She cooks the dishes and has a great group of Finnish friends over in Denver. As for me, I can ask for a beer, chocolate or voipulla and thats about it. I have been back there once and survived the mosquito's

Joni, your audio system must sound pretty amazing. My wife just banished all the home theater stuff from our living room so I'm staring at a 10" powered sub and some Bose 4.2 SII speakers. Hmm. Perhaps the garage setup will get more thump soon.

You can never have enough shelving. Looks like you have a good start.

Funny thing on the mosquito comments...that's the worst we get here. No snakes, poisonous anything, tornados, hurricanes or earthquakes. Just the skitters. Fortunately they are nearly absent here in town, and disappear everywhere in August.

Just had dinner at the "Hoito" which is the hub of all things Finn here :) Winter was so cold this year that we also found ourselves firing up the sauna a lot just to feel some serious heat. I'm feeling pretty Finnish today.

It looks like you are on the home stretch to complete your shop.

Hi Denwood, had a quick look on those Bose:s, wouldn't mind a set of those for my garage too. :) I might change those old UK:s for something smaller someday, but for now they do the job just fine.

Things are progressing slowly but surely, work at morning and babysitting in the evening.. :) Tomorrow i get some garage time for myself, the missus has a day off.

I got the parts, tools and paints sorted from the trailer last sunday, and with a little bit of organization: i still got plenty of room to fill with useless.. i mean, things i will need.

And a side project, to get the yard done i'm trying to build a flowerbed. Or something.. i had some excessive timber laying around that i first planned to use for a barbeque hut frame. This might end being a pile of firewood, we will see..

And as i was putting the shelves together saturday-evening while listening to Youtube, a couple of connection drops in my wifi and i found myself at the local computer store on monday.. These should do the trick, a wall-mount antenna for the house and a router for the garage, just in case..

I don't know how accurate the direction has to be where the antenna is pointing, so i'm going to make a turning bracket for it. So a quick trip to the boat section, and i found these:

Flush mount bracket and a perfect sized clamping for the pipe where the antenna is then attached. Some drilling and one split pipe pin through those parts to prevent it from turning, i think it should work.
