Thanks for the nice comments!

The bench is still lacking cushions, been borrowing them from the living room sofa when needed.. Having a cup of coffee, sitting at the bench (of course..) and looking at pics of old Datsuns, i got a little spark to continue on the body work for the pickup.

Main reason why i lacked inspiration was that i bought those wide rims for it and started widening the body from the bed sides. It's a bit easier to push the sides out when you have a few meters to blend it in. Especially when i'm not that good at sheet metal work. Here's from the first try, before cutting the freshly welded arches for some POS zg-flares.. The bottom parts are already done here, had to do the whole side. The small bed side rails (?) ,front wall, rear light surroundings and the floor was left from the old, everything else was cut out.

The previous owner had made the bed sides already once, mostly from anything you could weld together and needles to say, it looked quite bad. Taking some measurements from the cab, i bought some sheet metal that had the sharper bends already made, the rest i improvised using some vises and plastic sewer piping to roll the sides.. Widening the rear..

The bed sides where actually quite good, before i started welding the inner wheel wells and warped the arches. Another reason for trying the flares.

I thought the flares would also solve how to get the front end done without the wheels sticking out a few inches.. Well, it didn't work and after that i lost all interest in it.

Pics above where taken at the old garage, the car sat there untouched for a couple of years. And somewhere here i started on building my new garage.

And these are taken from the past 3-4 weeks.

I still had two new front fenders laying around, so i started working at the front, at this point i didn't even think about doing the bed sides over again.
Just cutting it up, and trying different things to get it in some kind of shape.

Fast forward and after some **** welding and grinding, one side done.

Got both sides done, time to start at the back. I ordered a new pair of front fenders to get the right looking arch for the back end and started cutting. I didn't want to do the inner arches again and warping it, so i measured a part that would fit inside the inner arch.

And **** welded in. Don't look pretty and need a lot of bondo, but im happy now.

After some rough sanding, it's starting to take shape.

As for the garage, i forgot to add a socket between the doors. It hasn't bothered me that much, just pops up every time i'm vacuuming cars inside the garage. Pulling the cord under the tires, etc.. it's annoying.

I found this cheap cord reel, and problem solved.

Had a empty socket by the radio cabinet, so took it in use. I wanted to be able to cut the power out from the reel when i'm not using it, for some reason, i really don't know why.. so i bought a power strip with a switch and two usb connections, i think i'll add a small cabinet or a shelf where i can put my phone to charge, and there's also room for a air hose reel beside the cord reel.

Nice work on the flares :) I've been having similar warping issues welding a steel hardtop to the rear deck of my Spitfire, despite going really slowly one spot at a time.

Would give me an excuse to pick up some bodywork hammers to try and flatten it out though...

Joni: the bench swing looks great. did you eventually cut off the extra chain sitting on top of your wings or beer holders? or did you just put it under them?

that's a lot of work on the wheel wheel coverings so hope it turns out so you like it a lot better than they were.

i know our rainy season is coming in a couple months so guessing the snow is not far from your area either. hope you get all your outside stuff done before it gets too cold or too much snow. you've done great work on the yard and garage and house so congrats.

cheers

Live and learn, or something like that. :) Tried welding with small spots and cooling with air, but did a great job bending the arch too much inwards. I didn't own a big enough hammer for that amount of warping..

It's amazing what some people are able to shape out of sheet metal with just some basic tools, i admire those skills. Something like this for example.. :

http://www.themetalsurgeon.com/2015/08/1932-ford-sedan-lakester-roof-chop-part2/

I think that this garage don't even own any spreaders for bondo, just because there's no need for them.. :D

Arches are fine now, just have to do a "bit" of sanding to get them looking right.

As for the bench; the excessive chains are cut off. I might have to find a place to store it during winter, but luckily there's still plenty of time for that. We have had christmas eves here when you could have mowed the lawn, but now that i'm working on the snow scooter for my daughter, it would be nice to have some snow.. :)

So let's update this a bit. Been adding some lights for the daughters playhouse and electric radiators for the garage, hoping that the electrician would connect them this week. Old radiators that i got for free, but those will work there just fine. Been working on the snowmobile too, here's a few pics from the progress:

A bicycle brake lever for throttle use and a killswitch added..

Showing in the last two pics, i had to re-do the track parts so the chain would run smoothly. Just ordered a engine and a centrifugal clutch housing for it from Ebay, should be here in a week so i can get on with the project.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Multitool...109942a&pid=100009&rk=1&rkt=1&sd=191974351764
We did a successful test drive on the grass with some help from a cordless drill, this might even work.. :)

JONI: i know it's probably middle of the winter and your daylight is limited, but did you get a chance to finish your little girl's cool snow machine? if you did how does she like it and how does it work?

hoping all is well in your world.

Hi, haven`t updated this in a while, just didn't feel like i had anything that should be posted here. Didn't realize it's been over two months..

I did finish the snowmobile, but sadly the clutch on the motor wasn't strong enough. Took it apart and now the sled is waiting for his turn, when i finish all the other projects, to be built again with a better solution for the clutch. The track works fine, maybe i'll find some other use for it.. we'll see.

Finished, before dismantling it..

The ongoing project can be seen partly in the pic, an 110cc chinese atv i bought from a friend, where the frame basically gave up. Took the motor, wheels and some small parts from it, then threw the rest of it in the bin.. Wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but thought that the engine is so small so better keep it as light as possible. First i wanted to make it something like this, but it seemed too time consuming/expensive compared to the condition of the parts i had laying around.

There's a project topic somewhere on this, sadly all i could find now was pics of it..

Anyway, started off with laying the engine and wheels on the table..

Fast forward, frame painted:

And how it looks now, quite a mess with the wiring..

All the suspension parts were so worn out, i decided to leave them out of the plan, and try to build the rest from parts i have laying around. If this thing seems to work and ride fine, i think i'll have to buy some new tires for it.. This build might also give some ideas on the upcoming, more full-size, go kart-project.

Between this, car problems, work and other things, we had a week's family vacation in Lapland.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapland_(Finland)

The company i work for has a cottage in Levi, we had a chance to spend the week there, watching reindeers walking a few meters from the terrace.. :)
http://www.levi.fi/en

First time for me, but surely not the last. A few pics from the trip, including a 500km drive to climb the Saana in Kilpisjärvi, a 4km hike to the top that reaches 1029m over the sea level. Not that high, but definitely worth visiting.
http://www.kilpisjarvi.org/en/

At the beginning of the climb there are stairs for the first 700m, but the stair measurement didn't suite me, it would have been easier for me to walk beside them..

Somewhere around the 600m mark, maybe.. Sweden and Norway on the other side of the lake.

From the top, names in the visitors book

And last, a selfie from the Levi ski-slopes watching the sun go down..

But today i've mostly been digging the frozen ground; my electrician forgot to add the copper ground wiring..

Next time i'll try to post something more garage-related.

Thanks drivesitfar and Denwood. :) No worries on the sled, it was a fun little project and the build itself might be more important than getting it fully working.. But the only issue seems to be the clutch, so i might start that project again, now that i got the small quad finished.

It's not pretty and a bit hard on the ride since it lacks suspension. What will i do with it, don't know yet. Might try to sell it, but on the other hand, it's perfect for playing around the house. :D

I have been thinking of getting a hose reel for the garage, and after months, i finally went and bought one. Actually two, one smaller with a 10m hose and a bigger one with 15m. The larger one i took in exchange for unneeded car-parts i returned. No more taking the whole 10m hose loop and spreading it around the garage when i only need a few meters of it..

The workbench reel found a place under the top shelf, split the line that comes under the workbench top and connected it there. Thought that the hose might need a bit of protection since it goes through the workbench top, so i took a table leg and ran it through it.

The larger one needs a wall mount fabricated, i might have time for it tomorrow. Installed some electrical PVC piping to ease getting the former air hose attached a bit nicer. The old hose was a bit too stiff to use so it will feed the bigger reel now.

JONI: looks like you figured out a good spot for your air hoses. that ATV looks like fun.

how's the family and are you still dark almost 24/7 and snowed in or is it getting warmer and a little sunshine now? any new projects??

cheers

I have something small going on..

Changing the thermostat and upper radiator hose on the GTS. Lots of fun. Thermostat attaches to the piping that runs below the front cylinder cam, and the 90`turn is connected to the upper radiator hose. The outside of the plastic is pretty solid but on the inside it's soft like wax. The C-looking part beside the o-seal was originally attached to the plastic, and held the o-ring in place. I found it inside the tube, no wonder it started to leak coolant..

I'm in the middle of selling this car, had a buyer coming over to have a look on it the same day when the thermostat broke. I've had enough with this, now the ecu for airbags is broken, it's going for parting out.

But it should be driveable for at least 500km where it's going, so i kind of promised to fix it before we close the deal on it. I didn't want put it on the road with some dodgy fixes that would leave it on the road after 100km.. So here we are now, spending a couple hundred euros more on a car that's getting parted out. Oh well..

The garage is getting a air source heat pump installed in next week. I bought a Mitsubishi unit that has 4,6kW heating power so i'm hoping it should ease a bit on the electric bill when warming the garage.

Family is doing fine, daughter keeps getting bigger every day. :) Weather has been pretty good, much warmer than usually, only a few -degrees C` and just 10cm of snow. Feels like spring.. :)

Hi drivesitfar, sorry it took so long to answer.. Been too busy working weekends and nights, while trying to spend some time with the family between that..

I actually wrote a long reply a few days ago, but i managed to loose all of it while the site logged me out.. well, anyway:

All is good, the old car is sold for scrap and i managed to purchase a newer one, 2010 1.4l Nissan Note. Seems like the old one didn't want to be sold. After the thermostat repair everything worked well. For a week.. After that, the car broke down again, this time from a different place. But the buyer seemed to be ok with it, he knew the history of the car and was going to part it out anyway. To bad it gave him just some unnecessary hassle to pick it up with a trailer.

The new ride, already got the windows tinted a bit:

Coming up: A 3-way active soundsystem build, lowering, new alloys.. list goes on.

After the final inspection was done, i added some weatherprotection to the carport. Bought two sheets of light roofing to the openings.

The garage got the Mitsubishi msz-sf35veh air-heat-pump installed a week ago. It should give 4,6kW heat and if needed in summer, cooling power 3,8kW. Been very pleased with it. I've kept the basic temp around 10´C. Nothing much to see here, but anyway:

Here's something from the past weeks, some of the pics are taken from my IG-account:

For the car:

Adding DRL-lights in the fog light pods, cut the hole with a Dremel and used the cover plate bracket for installation. Seemed to be a good quality set, had two different sized cover rings for fitting so the cutting hole didn't need to be perfect. For some rigidity, i added some Sikaflex between the light and bumper.

Made the front end look much better..

Some maintenance, Eibach -30mm lowering springs, new shocks, aux belts, etc.. Sadly the front end is too high for my taste, i'm going to order the H&R -45mm set and leave the Eibach kit for winter use..

Boot build started, the amp will be here on the left side, a panel will cover everything else but the sub. The weather was still cold when i started on this, and glass fiber is not my favorite material, so i made the enclosure out of plywood. It's still missing some supporting parts from the inside, those and the sand and resin-mix will be added when i finish the hole for the 12" Alpine sub. With the cover panels in place, i loose only about 9cm of the boot height.

Wheels arrived, 7.5x17" et20 at front and 8.5x17" et30 rear, with 205/40 and 215/40 tires. Imagine the height of the car with stock suspension..

While working on the car, i would have had some use for good car ramps. Since the purchase for the scissor lift is still on hold, i decided to build the ramps. First they were going to be made out of angle iron, but counting the steel amount needed vs. money.. Time to browse the web again for ideas. I found pics of a nice set made out of plywood on Pinterest, but the cost would have been the same with the iron version.

The wood i gathered in winter was sitting behind the garage, it was free and had a good amount of it so why not make some use for it. I wanted a set where i could remove the ramp part out of the way when it was not needed.

After some quick measurements for the ramp part, time to start cutting and planning while working on them.. :D Ramp was made out of 2x4 and the top is 1.25" ? (32mm) board. The rest of it is made out of 5x5 and 1.25". They are binded together with some threaded rods and nails. Added some latches to keep them together when driving the car on them and handles for easier carrying, they are a bit heavy.. :D

First one nearly done, better than i expected, i might even have to paint them. Might do some kind of removable stopper for the other end when the ramp is removed, just in case. Maybe some long bolts welded on iron tubing that could be slotted to holes drilled in the 5x5.

Edit:first test

Joni: looks like your new fog lights were there all the time. WELL DONE!!

i like your design for the ramps cause which should give you much better access.

good to see you posting again and are you finding other threads useful here or do you spend much time on GJ?

i learn something (and usually many things) daily on here and have met and talk to members all over the world and i didn't know anybody on GJ when i joined 4 years ago.

i'm guessing maybe you are getting a little warmer and maybe more sunshine now?

cheers

Well, the snow has melted, if only the temperatures would rise too.. :) It's starting to keep on the + side now even at nights, not that bad.

I do visit the forum usually two-three times in a week, but i mostly keep myself lurking at the background. Since i started this build thread, it has at least helped me to improve my english writing skills, if i have any..

I usually know what i'm trying to say in my head, but getting the sentences written in a right order and so that it still makes sense reading it .. that's another story.. :D

I'm happy how the ramps turned out, height is pretty good. There's 60cm from the bumper bottom to the floor in the last pic. I still have several meters of that 5x5 left, so i was thinking of making a longer set you could combine with the ramp-parts, so you could drive the whole car up.

Just need to make them in two separate pieces you stack together, otherwise that's a two man job moving them around..

How often will i need them, most likely only once a year, if even that, but i don't have anything else use for the 5x5. The wood is stacked now in the carport side, so already got a perfect spot where to keep them protected from the rain.

I really should start focusing my energy on the Datsun.

The weather is getting warmer so i could proceed with the huge amount of bondo and sanding it requires outdoors. Getting the thing painted this year would be nice. There's a car painting school 50 km from here, i was thinking
i'd ask if they would be interested taking the Datsun for practical work, finishing the bodywork and painting it. Can't blame them if they are not interested.. i sure ain't. :D

Oilpan needs some modifications on the sump, it's too near the front axle and won't fit. Drivers side door needs some patching on the panel, tailgate too. Front fenders might need some cutting and welding on the bottom part, after the widening the seam between the door and wing is a bit too much.

Thanks Denwood, it's a bit odd looking car, but i like it. No CAN Bus, manual gearbox.. Power windows front and AC, that's about it, just perfect.

The mini-split was installed after the coldest days were gone, one main reason was that the installation temp was max -10*C so that the 5 year unit guarantee would be active. Something to do with the compressor vacuuming if i remember correct. We had some days below -15*C after the installation. I keep it normally in the +10*C setting when the garage is not in use, and if needed, rise it up for the next lowest setting that is +16*C. For a garage that size, it warms it up pretty quick. The unit is a bit over sized in power for that space, but better that way.

Joni: i've read all your posts and your ENGLISH IS OK. I've never had an issue understanding what you were saying and of course pictures always help if there is any way to show things you are talking about.

I like the idea of having the school work on your truck and at worst case you'll have to re do it later if they don't do a great job.

have fun with the rest of the forum as you have the time to check it out and post as you feel like it.

A bump on this thread.

The car project has been on hold, due to lack of time etc. A week ago a friend offered his trailer for me. He didn't have the space to keep it and not that much use for it, so he thought he might as well sell it. Basically it's been stored in my backyard behind the garage for the time he has owned it. The price was very reasonable and so, here's a few pics from the past week.

Some previous owner hauled probably a snowmobile in it, can't figure out no other reason for the holes in the front wall.. Those need to go.

After a good wash

Changing the front wall whit the supervisor

The ceiling was in a pretty bad condition too, so this is the part where things got a bit out of hand..

New led-lights arrived in 4 days from the UK, pretty fast delivery, here's just a part of them.

New ceiling getting holes drilled

Sidewall installation going on

And just got the last panel in place, here's the reverse lights installed in the front corners. They will be controlled via the car's rear fog light-switch. I'm adding a switch in the trailer in case the need for using the fog light in traffic.

Well, that's it for now..

JONI: since you are probably planning on keeping the trailer i don't blame you for taking it down as far as you did before you started putting new parts on it.

looks good, but not as good as your young supervisor.

take care

Thanks drivesitfar, she was very helpful picking up the old round head bolts with a magnet.. :)

Finally got the wiring done, also added two led-lights inside. A door switch turns them on when the ramp is lowered. Excuse the mess with the wiring.. :)

Poorly visible door switch.. and the padlock for the rear door latch found his place too. All the wiring is pulled through PVC piping. Well, almost all; i couldn't fit the wire for the other interior-light inside the piping afterwards, so i had to use some zip-ties for that..

Ramp got some grey paint that i had laying around from the workbench build.

The reverse lights are connected to the driving lights and they work with a toggle switch mounted on the driver's side wall. Only thing left to do is replace the door seal and a new set of tires.

Washed the "highway truck".. Time to start hauling stuff, all the 135kg i can legally load in it with this combination.. :D
So, a car change is something that needs to be done in the near future. Sadly, i like this Nissan a lot. At the moment there's not that much of use for the trailer, but the towing capacity is something that needs to be considered when looking for a new vehicle.

Next project will be getting the daughters curved slide built next to her playhouse..

Joni: i love that you let the SUPERVISOR join you in the garage and give her stuff to do. keep up the great work cause she's always smiling.

first off your trailer is looking AWESOME. a few things you might want to think about are:

1) spare tire maybe mounted unless your car's spare tire is the same size as your trailer tires.

2) tool box in the tongue was very handy on my trailer and i'll have one on the next trailer i build or buy

3) that little wheel to roll your trailer around like they also have on boats is very handy especially if you ever have to move your trailer with a load in it not attached to the car

didn't you own a small truck you were/are rebuilding or is that the one you sold for scrap?

keep up the great work around your place cause it always looks better when you have time to take some more pictures and post them.

have any questions or need anything just ask and if i can help you or point you to a thread i will or maybe another member will see your questions first and give you some help.

you're doing great on your own and i bet your weather is warming up too.

cheers

Joni, great job on the trailer. Having it fully enclosed like that will really help if you're using it for storage. I hear you on the towing capacity. I was a bit surprised to find out my A3 TDI has zero towing ability due to the DSG transmission...not cool. Our next vehicle will need a 1500kg tow capacity at minimum now that our Westfalia camper is sold.

So, like many of us might already know, Photobucket made a decision that resulted on my part to deleting my account. All the pics that i posted here was linked from their site, so until i find a different site to host my pics, maybe Dropbox is the answer, this topic is going to lack photos. I highly doubt i will update all the pics i posted so far here, we shall see.

Joni: i feel for you for what PB has done to your thread. if you want to just start downloading the pictures in thumbnail form like i do on my posts i use the paperclip above our posts to download up to 7 posts per pictures. that way it makes your thread a bit easier to read cause it's more compact and if the reader wants to see a picture full size all they need to do is click on the picture twice.

here's a thread i started cause i wanted to simplify the option and eliminate all the bitching and moaning the other threads have in them. see if you prefer one of these options if you don't like the one i use.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=364709

good luck and sorry for your loss, but you still have a great garage, home and family to post pictures and great stuff to teach and show us.

Hi drivesitfar, sorry it took so long to answer, the issue with Photobucket kind of took my interest of updating anything. I really should take a look for another photo hosting site, but haven't had the time or patience for that.

Nothing special here, just work, summer holiday and some sick leave for 3 weeks hurting my lower back on the last day working on the yard. Shoveling in a wrong position i guess, three hits in the soft ground is all it took.

I couldn't walk properly for the first 5 days, back problems are nothing to joke about.. It's a lot better now, not perfect, but it's ok. Something good about that, i guess, finally took a step forward and signed myself into a gym. Been 8 years since last time.. Starting easy now on monday, first getting the back better before any harder exercice.

As for the projects, no big updates. Made a trailer for the daughters atv, or more like for the lawnmower, for gardening things etc. Now i just need to buy the damn lawnmower.. Datsun is still in the same state since my last update, been pondering on the idea of trying to sell it, but a few minutes on google with searching 720*s.. don't know yet. If i only could get it painted, that probably would increase my intress on it.

Finally got the faucet and hose reel installed at the garage, should help during winter to have a chance washing the car sometimes inside.

Getting some interest in photography again, seems a partially break from it was a good idea. I bought a drone, finally, a DJI Mavic. And a fullframe D750 Nikon, what an update being used to the old D7000..

That's about it. I'll try to fix that photo hosting issue.

Joni: i know there are several options to photos besides Photobucket. i used Photobucket for years and just when i joined here they started making changes i didn't like so i just download up to 7 pictures per post via the paperclip method sort of like an email and GJ is getting more cheaper memory so they can handle all of this so the PB thing doesn't happen again with them or any other photo hosting site.

got to run and just wanted to give you a photo posting option that works for me and i've got a lot of photos.

i just built this cedar mailbox stand for example and if you click on the thumbnail 2 times it's full size isn't it?

cheers

Joni: i used to have back aches fairly frequently and after having them professionally maneuvered back into the right position by a Japanese Shiatsu for almost 20 years when he passed i tried the Chiropractor route.

i didn't like going in for the same adjustment every week or two and discovered an inversion table. i actually haven't seen my old Chiropractor for close to 10 years now and when he found out i was using an inversion table he just said don't hang for more than 5 minutes at a time or per day.

so i hang 5 minutes a day whether i hurt or not and at almost 62 i still lift a lot of weight. in fact if you look closer to the mailbox stand you'll see a cast iron drain under it and i poured 39 80 pound bags of concrete in that frame lifting them a bag at a time from the store into my trailer, then to my shed and from my shed to hand mix one bag at a time. no bag issues as i'm writing this to speak of. i haven't taken an Advil in almost ten years for any back pain so you might give one a try. i'm not sure Teeter ups are available in Finland, but i bet you have something similar to try maybe even at your gym.

here's the link and maybe there are a few videos.

https://teeter.com/

just trying to help you help yourself and i hate to hear about guys in pain so best of luck with that in any way you fix it.

cheers

Work in progress, going to plant grass between the bushes and the end of the house, but that's something for next spring.

So, let's throw this here too. Here you can see the lot. Some minor changes has been done since this was taken:
untitled-1-3.jpg

Cleaned the timber and stacked it behind the garage for further use. I need to build a new storage for firewood and other stuff for gardening, this maybe next summer.

Added the garden lights and a motion detector to the pole seen near the left corner, so it switches them on when arriving home.

The end of the house will be filled a bit with soil, plant some grass, maybe a few apple trees/bushes, etc.
